Changing Domain on existing Google Ads account

Posted by Western_Cup4942 on December 7, 2023 at 7:02 pm

Contemplating taking on a new client who has a 4 year old Google Ads account but performance is very poor. The first thing I noticed is that their website needs a real rebuild front and back end. And on top of that, they have a non descriptive domain but do have a much better one they’re not using.

So I see opportunity to use to the “newer”, but unused, domain set up a subdomain and have my UX person design some good landing pages. That’s the easy part.

Where I’m not as familiar is the best way to implement a new domain in the account. There is 4 years worth of data in 3 campaigns and I’d like to leverage the conversion data to get them cranking on max conversions. Pretty sure I could just set up a new ad group in the existing campaign(s) with the new domain and leverage the max conversion data of the existing ad group correct? Or does that not really work when you introduce a new domain?

4 years of data in the Google ad account doesn’t matter. Google optimizes using the last 30 days. Maybe this new domain might help from a branding or maybe some SEO POV I am unaware of.

However, on Google ads the new domain name doesn’t mean much. If the site is really the issue, set up those new landing pages on the current site. If they work then great but doing all these changes on unproved landing pages is a lot of work for what may not be tons of benefits.
