  Canonical URLs

  I’ve been getting a bit confused with canonical and seeing a few errors in my site audits.

  Am I right in thinking that a canonical URL can be stated with both the tag and also include it in the sitemap stating it as the preferred, while the non-canonical URL would be left out of the sitemap but still left to be indexed?

  I hope that makes sense!
