  • Can Instagram and Snapchat save pictures that are meant to be viewed once on their server?

For example maybe some criminal footage was sent to someone on DMs that could be viewed once before it was gone for ever and then the receiver tries to report it to the authorities. Would their servers have the evidence automatically saved for the authorities to access it?

This all depends on their internal retention policy but it’s certainly technically possible. I don’t think Snapchat is end to end encrypted.

They’ll have their policies listed. A good benchmark is the information will be stored for up to about 3 months. It also depends on what it is and if someone still has it in their messages or saved. Sometimes it won’t be the full video or image though, just that it happened.

Yes it’s very possible and quite likely. How else is Snapchat free and facebook/Instagram is free because you are the product. They are closed source so you have no idea what’s going on behind your back. Only messaging app like is truly view once because its open source so anyone can see how the software works.
