  • Can a computer science major get a SEO job?

I literally have no experience other than single IT support job that I had for few months (temp work) and I know how to do front development coding but thats it. (I just graduated btw)

I find seo so interesting and wanted to pursue it. I tried to make my resume seo related but I’m only getting rejected. A lot of these jobs want a 3+ year experienced person who specifically has a marketing degree.

I was thinking since AI coming to search engines maybe people would want a technical person on their team? Idk maybe not.

    Any advice?

Based on a lot of the people posting replies in this subreddit, the answer is yes. The important question is should they?

Yup, doable. That’s what I did. Pivoted after working in web dev a while. But yeah, as far as SEO jobs, a lot of jobs are gonna wanna see some experience. Your best bet is to do some freelancing leaning in on marketing, or local businesses that have that focus. Fresh off of school is gonna be tough.

The Dev experience is super helpful but as scarlet said below it’s gonna be difficult getting an SEO job with zero experience. Worth making your own sites or offering voluntary work to start to gain some experience

The only jobs I see where experience isn’t necessary are the exec level jobs at agencies, but they’re low paid. Your dev skills will be incredibly useful and you could pitch yourself to clients as an optimisation specialist with a focus on increasing site speed as that’s such a key thing now and something a lot of people struggle with so you could fill a gap for companies that already have content strategies. Then you could roll out other aspects of SEO.

Id hire a comp sci grad with no experience out of college for an entry level role a lot of the job is trainable but someone without a firm grasp in technical matters is not going to get super far in seo imo

I come from a developer background, so I would say yes. I would say that the computer prep training you’ve had is a somewhat competitive advantage. Be coachable and enjoyable to be around with.

If you enjoy it, yes. If you don’t, stick to what can make you the most money.

SEO is very interesting, only you need a proper guidance, one of the best field, and I am a master of it.

Buy your name as a domain name. Make a website for your name and make it your portfolio. Get it to rank for your name.

    Add this to your resume.

Logical thinking, a scientific way of working with data, attention to details, that is a big plus. Just from my daily experience of two decades in the industry: I have met a lot more skilled people with a non-marketing background than with a marketing degree when it comes to SEO.
