Bidding, CPC & Ad Rank clarification

Hey everyone! Google Search campaign question:

I had a marketing consultant tell me today that a high CPC (anything more than $4) would be that high because it's putting your ad at the very top of Search. And to bring down the CPC that would mean adjusting the cost to put the ad somewhere in the middle of search.

It was my understanding that Ad Rank isn't a bidding strategy, but maybe there's some truth in this that I don't know. Can anyone explain this better than this person did?

Your marketing consult doesn’t know what they are talking about. A random number doesn’t mean anything since it is relative to what your competitors are willing to pay. You could have a $1 CPC and be at the top of search, or you could have a $4 CPC and be middle of the page.

Google has a good page on [ad rank](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722122?hl=en) but really it is your quality score related factors and your bid. You need to worry more about everything related to ad rank and not just your bids. Otherwise, you just look at the trees and not the whole forest. People often over look things like campaign structure, ad copy and how people search for whatever it is you sell. Don’t just focus on your bids or you won’t get very far.
