  • Are Footer Backlinks Problematic?

Posted by seohelper on December 4, 2020 at 2:36 pm

From what I’ve seen, it’s common practice for web design companies to include a link to their website in the footer of every site they build. To me that never seemed like a problem, just an easy way to score a nice link. However when using the backlink tool in SEM Rush, I noticed that they listed ‘link in the footer’ as one of the reasons why one of my backlinks was toxic.

That being said, is this no longer a safe practice?

Footer Backlinks aren’t working now. Google is smarter and smarter than us!

When the rel nofollow appeared, and we proved Google was not respecting it, I was quoted during a keynote with the following : « I prefer a nofollow clicked link in the content, instead of a dofollow in the footer gangbang ».

Check out the algorithm of the Reasonable Surfer to understand how all links are not created equal on the page.

If you want to get/give credit to the designer/developer you can do that in the source code. If you’re going to link to the designer/developer in the footer it should be nofollow. Also if you’re trying to get some SEO value from footer backlinks you won’t. If a company you’re working with/for insists on using them make sure they’re nofollow and move on.
