It’s been just about a month since I came on as a social media assistant for a local event that has been in the works but lacking in social media presence. I’m much more a social media manager as I’m the one with the keys to the accounts.

I created a strategy that involved making content themes with a more education-forward approach. I’m not the graphic designer but I write the captions and so far I think the content looks good, but the engagement hasn’t been there at all. I just feel so down on myself when my boss says I’m doing great things. Idk if this is like imposter syndrome or just the fact that I’m brand new to all of this and there’s plenty I don’t know myself and am still learning.

I’ve helped write website copy and am helping to launch a newsletter. I’m also now trying to work with influencers as well, though some people want to go bigger with celebrities (despite them costing far more than they want to pay much smaller influencers that create content that would actually align with our audience)

I was told I have a window of like 14 days or so to run social ads in sorta like an all-in approach to put money into advertising close to the event start date. I’m still figuring out how social ads actually work but I wanna say I get the gist of it.

Now, I have some ideas for ads, including an idea that a coworker came up with despite not working in social. It’s a good idea and would hit the younger audience segment we are going for. But other ideas would include an ad that showcases students and an ad that would showcase the event as a family-friendly one for the more parent audience segment.

My question is, first of all am I just bad at my job because I’m not seeing good results?

Second: for social ads, can I potentially run 2-3 ads at the same time during that 14 day period of before the event starts and during it? They would hit different segments of our audience that we defined, but I know that the risk of audience lap exists.

Thank u all for ur help. This path month has just be full of stress

You cannot expect “good” results if any in 1month working on a new project. You are an assistant not an expert marketer and even they is questionable what results they can pull in 1 month.

If your boss said you are doing a good job then for sure you are doing something right.

For the question: yes you can run 2-3 ads at the same time heck i would recommend that you try to do a few tests during that time aka try more different ads to see what works (depending on the budget)

+1 to what’s been said by others here – don’t get discouraged yet. One month is a very small amount of time – social success typically comes from running a marathon, not a sprint – and if your boss is happy, that’s a great sign. That said, remember that your keys to engaging your target audience include emotion, authenticity and publishing content that connects with that audience. People are more likely to interact with a post when it evokes an emotion and it’s written in an authentic voice. Do your posts make your target audience stop scrolling because they feel an emotion? Are they conversational in the tone of your audience? Are they focused on content your audience feels is entertaining or important? It’s worth asking yourself those questions as you draft your posts. Hope that helps!

If you have the budget, expand your advertising to other avenues. (Snapchat ads, tiktok, Spotify, pinterest, Google, fb, ig, reddit, local radio stations, etc)

Start them out in 3 day intervals just to see your reach and engagement and adjust your targets as necessary. Once you figure out which platform gives you the most conversion (either via ticket sales or website clicks or whatever) max out your advertising budget for those platforms while still maintaining the other platforms to advertise for the time being just for mere brand presence. (Helps with SEO in the future)

Social Media is a wild wild west when it comes to marketing. If your boss is satisfied with your job performance, I wouldn’t stress about it. Just make sure to keep track of which content gets the most engagement as it will vary depending on the platform. Use tools to automate what can be automated but always double and triple check posts before they go live.

Do not get discouraged! You need to look at the overall goal of the campaign, not just how large the reach is. Focus on the audience, the engagement and the impact. My first position was at BuzzFeed where it was hit as many people as possible as quickly as possible. Now, my job is totally different. The goal is to hit a specific group and success looks like hitting the one person who can make the moves vs. 100,000 “fans”. Take a look objectively:

-What does success look like? Refine your voice. Stop the scroll.

-Your first test should give you a sense of what works/what doesn’t, and you refine from there.

-Are you using the *right* platform?

-If you can, A/B test graphics and copy, and research what formats work depending on platforms.

-Remember, on social, first try does not = failure, it’s a way to help you learn more about your audience.

-Do not be afraid to take calculated risks!

-For platforms like LinkedIn, 14 days is the minimum. Consider a longer flight time, and there is often a delay in analytics.

    Good luck!
