I don’t think there is any cleaner way (and safer way) to do a migration that a 301 redirect. If you have existing traffic and rankings you want to preserve, what you suggest might be okay for users but Google won’t like it.

Safest way to redirect is to 301 redirect from one page to another. Also right now isn’t a great time to consider this with Google request of indexing button broken and their current indexing issues.
