Why is YouTube charging me $51 per click?

Has anyone EVER seen YouTube in-stream CPCs this insane before?

I have an older Google Ads account (created 2011) that previously spent 5 figures successfully on YouTube ads.

After ~13-14 months inactivity, campaigns now behave bizarrely:

    • campaigns sit with almost no spend for ~6-7 days
    • then suddenly start spending
    • BUT the CPC becomes completely insane

    Latest example:
    One Maximize Conversions campaign:

    • spent $102.86
    • for ONLY 2 clicks
    • CPC = $51.43

Yes, literally $51.43 CPC for YouTube in-stream traffic.

Historically this account was usually around:

    • ~$0.80 CPC normally
    • anything above ~$1.20 was already unusually high

This is now the SECOND time campaigns suddenly started spending at absurd CPCs after long stalled periods.

    Important context:

    • no suspensions
    • no policy violations
    • campaigns are Eligible
    • only targeting YouTube in-stream
    • targeting still shows multi-million available impressions

    Questions:

    1. What could possibly cause YouTube CPCs to spike this high?
    2. Can Maximize Conversions + in-stream-only inventory create behavior this extreme?
    3. Could dormant account reactivation after long inactivity cause weird auction behavior?
    4. Has anyone seen campaigns sit dead for ~7 days and THEN suddenly start spending at absurd CPCs?

Would really appreciate insight from anyone experienced with YouTube/Demand Gen because this behavior seems completely abnormal.

Your spend is so low that it makes this analysis silly. It’s like me say I had a 100% CTR because I had one click and one impression. Technically it’s true but it’s a waste of time trying to draw a conclusion

Max conversions just bids whatever it wants to try get a conversion, with no data (as its been paused the last 90 days) it has no idea what will get a conversion and is happy to pay a premium to find out

sounds like smart bidding gone haywire after the dormancy, ive seen maximize conversions burn through cash like that when the model has no recent conversion data to learn from, id swap to manual cpc or set a max cpc cap until it stabilizes
