Absolutely everything you do on WhatsApp is used to improve ad targeting on facebooks ad network. They could use your device Id or phone number as the primary key for matching you with your Facebook account. Whatsapp also gives them access to your phone contact list so it also helps them build up a picture on your ‘dark’ network
