What else do I need to became a competitive SEM manager

Posted by seohelper on October 10, 2020 at 8:02 pm

Hi, everyone, I want to keep growing in mi career and became a SEM manager or similar position. I have 3 years experience, I’m specialist in google sem campaigns and i have solid knowledge in analytics, display, video and also fb ads. Where I work there are no sem managers, only “managers”, so If any of you could share with me what kind of knowledge, habilities, what tools I should master and etcetera I will be very grateful.

    Learn GA, GTM and attribution/reporting.

Need to also understand split testing CTAs and overall website trends and user heat maps or UX.

Doesn’t matter if the ads performance looks great when post-click is a black hole. Need to know what happened to lose conversions and how to fix it.

I think beyond just knowing the technical aspects of growing into a SEM manager (depending on how big your org is), you will need to learn a lot of soft skills like being able to present and communicate in a non-PPC in the weeds way to talk to clients. This has taken me far in my career when a lot of my peers where viewed as weird and nerdy in front of corporate clients. Understanding technical is only one aspect to being a SEM manager and will only take you so far.

If your question was more geared towards the technical knowledge and skills you need, you can do research on LinkedIn for SEM Manager positions and see what skills they’re looking for. 🙂
