  • What comes first – SEO or Rebuild?

Posted by CauliflowerTiny1454 on January 8, 2023 at 4:59 pm

Right now our company is SEO free (we are not working with a firm) , hasn’t always been this way but we ended our bad agreement and started searching for a new company.

In the midst of searching I decided that we should probably just redo the website.

I’ve interviewed a few companies and most tell me to “reskin” the site vs rebuild – this way to keep structure SEO. This makes sense to me..

My question is do I reskin then get my SEO company to work on it before going live?

Obviously working together is ideal but let’s be realistic, unless it’s the same firm doing the SEO and reskin working together is going to take 12 months – the goal is 4 months to push live.

When I looked at using the same firm the price just rockets.

** wanted to add I understand that SEO goes into the rebuild and it will be top of thought. I am talking about using firm A for a rebuild and firm B for long-term SEO.

Firm A will optimize during the rebuild but I don’t feel that they are a good long-term partner for ongoing SEO.

If the company doing the rebuild is actively pushing for a reskin to preserve the current SEO status, I would do that before starting to invest more into SEO.

Getting a generic SEO audit with things to include for the relaunch will mess up your timeline.

Make sure to plan some budget for the implementation of SEO recommendations once you hire someone to work on SEO.

Go to [pagespeed.web.dev](https://pagespeed.web.dev) , check your mobile speed. If it’s way too low; you’ll have troubles.

SEO should be part of your rebuild. Your rebuild should have purpose.

It doesn’t make sense to me. Creating or consulting on the creation of a website that meets the requirements of search engines is part of search engine optimization. E.g., for Google user experience pages, including Web Vitals, there is a search rank signal. Sometimes getting high UX requires a complete overhaul and even building a website from scratch, sometimes reskin is sufficient. What was the plan of your SEO agency at the start?

If you are looking to reddit rather than your seo team for this answer, I would rethink that investment. They are integrated. What platform are you on and are you migrating or just redesigning?

SEO should be part of the rebuild process.. every page set up with SEO in mind. This is your on-page SEO. Titles, meta, on page seo’d content, schema, page speed, User experience.

Once that’s complete, you focus on link building and content marketing.. which is going to be its own set of skills.

Any good web dev worth his price, is going to build the site with all of this in mind.. this is how I build and quote sites for customers.

Yes, you can find a 10 page website designer for $500. And yes, I’m charging $5k, because when I build them, I build them to make money and attract traffic.

Rebuild with a technical focused consultant or firm QAing with you at each step.

In the meantime, if there are content gaps or creative asset gaps you know need to be filled, knock that out so you’re in a solid place at relaunch time. This does not have to be some big hairy SEO retainer, but research, outlines, and either you and your experts internally write it or have the agency execute on this narrow scope.

Happy to be a sounding board if you want to connect. (Disclosure, I work for a mid-large agency and you probably need something smaller than what we offer)

I would say rebuild with an eye on SEO.

I’ve consulted on a lot of website redesigns and rebuilds because, frankly, web designers are generally terrible at SEO. I’ve seen these things go south so many times without a competent SEO being involved.
