    Hey guys,

So I’ve been digging into a competitor ranking above us on a few keywords. I want to see what they’re doing differently and how we can improve.

I noticed that they had a counter just above their ‘add to cart’ button, which says: “?341 SOLD IN THE LAST 7 DAYS” — I thought this was impressive for just one of their products, so I had a look around and they have some impressive sales numbers on all their products. I decided to check their code. It turns out that this is a page visits counter, not a sales counter. I verified this by reloading a private browser several times and watched the counter go up. It’s a page visits counter by Effective Apps.

This seems sketchy as fuck to me. Is this legal?

It could fall under advertising standards – I’m pretty sure booking.com got rumbled for this as they were using a random number generator to induce scarcity and drive sales.

The grey hat in me would attack the counter with a script.
Ie 15 trillion blenders sold in the past 14 minutes

Just make it a meme and damage there credibility

so many do this. i like the ones with pop ups that says “Mary C in Washington just bought this 1 minute ago”. The pop up just keeps going off in the bottom corner with different names and cities.

    lol

The random pop is called FOMO

you can create fake fomo or you can link it with your orders

Say you got 50 order in jan 2023 you will link it with the fomo plugin and it will cycle it without showing date of purchase

Other you can create fake FOMO to increase scarcity

NotificationX is one of the plugins you can try
