Lost my job so going to start something of my own

I am really sorry if it doesn’t, but here it goes.
I was a manager (SEO) in a huge company a week ago.
As the title explains, I lost my job because of the world wide recession.
With everything going around the world, I don’t think I’ll be able to find a job of that cadre very soon.
That’s why I was thinking about starting something of my own.
I do have a couple of SEO clients, but I really wanted to grow as an agency.
I’ve been cold calling for the couple of days now, but I am struggling to find businesses who need SEO.
What’s the best way to get some clients?
P.S. If there’s anyone here who wants SEO done for them, do let me know.

I haven’t been let go recently, but it happened to me in the past. Having followed other’s advice I’ve started a side-hustle talking about SEO, while in my current job and I recommend you do the same.
Don’t start from a vulnerable position. Better get another job in SEO and start something on the side.
Having said that, I’m yet to get my first client. Even post lockdown, with so many companies going remote, I found it hard to get new clients.
Try seojobs.com for a fully-remote position. Hope you get back on your feet soon 😉

Sorry to hear that – but in my experience getting the boot often leads you to take the plunge when you might not have done so otherwise and very good things can come of it – so fingers crossed it works out like that for you. Sounds like a top idea to set up an agency.
Where are you based? I had a spate of going to local business get-togethers or meetups and I often left thinking that’s where I’d start if I had an agency. Gets you straight infront of small business owners who are all looking for growth but haven’t the foggiest idea of how to start and are often looking for the whole ‘website/seo’ package – though they often don’t even know that’s what they need! Always helps if you’re local to them too.

Have you tried Upwork? SEO is gonna be tough during a recession since most Biz owners ditch Ad budgets first in a recession. Try to find a biz you can convince to gain market-share while the market is down.

I’m sorry to hear that. I know the feeling. I was laid off in July from a good job. I have a much better one now. But still bouncing back from it and how it upended my life.
I wouldn’t hyper-focus on only your SEO if you end up looking elsewhere. Even with layoffs, companies will hire based on experience and skills.

I would explore talking to ad agencies. I can give you some insight from working for one the last 12 years: before I started in-house (doing web build, SEO, everything web related) they were constantly looking for contractors to do SEO and sell to their clients.
The issue they ran into was lack of consistency, so they hired me to run it in-house, but there are ad agencies in every city, and you could contact them to offer contract SEO work.
If they weren’t looking, sell the idea and benefits to them: money left on the table they could be billing from existing clients, helping resolve the big issue of clients who see commercials (the clients are paying them for) getting to the website and making contact, lightening the load/freeing up time for their web person/people to focus on web design, social media marketing, and SEM/other web marketing while you take care of SEO….. however you want to phrase it.
Last tip: be conscientious of how you contact the companies. As the “web person”, I see every contact attempt that comes through the website contact forms and various non-specific person emails (info@, webmaster@, contact@, etc), and erase all the attempts of people trying to do this (watching out for my job).
However, there have been large stretches of time where I am swamped with web builds and other web marketing and wish we had an outside contractor to lighten the load, but don’t have the extra time to find someone. You could contact the company web department and convey the same idea: let me lighten your load. If no response, I’d find the specific email for the decision makers and contact them directly by email and phone.

Maybe you can reach out to web site devs. You may be able to work with them with their existing customers or with any new ones that they are developing a web site for.

Start an seo company and niche down in product based startups and ecom seo if that’s your experience.

The best thing to do is to build a website for yourself that ranks high for words that someone would search when they’re looking for someone to help with seo (ie Seo consultant). Also never a bad idea to make a class
