A local SEO agency suggested that we create micro websites with different domains in addition to our main website. Each micro site will cover a specific service that we offer.

Will this truly help us to rank better locally?

Sounds like they are trying to create exact match domains and some sort of linking scheme – Google discounted this practice years ago – I would not go this route. It’ll increase your cost, each domain would require yearly fees, server costs for each site, etc not to mention the time it would take for each of those domains to gain any authority.

Your main website should have a services section that talks about what services you provide. Less work, already own the domain and have a server for your site. Will maintain the authority of your site, and the internal linking will benefit better.

Just need to find some who plays it straight I don’t really see the point of a single site for each speciality anyway to be honest

I bet your dentists could write some great content for each page on each subject and just get someone to re-edit them for SEO

I do micro sites. They work.

But not with different domains or maybe even subdomains.

This is how I rank personal injury lawyers with a large service area in a rural place.

May be different if you’re in a population center or highly competitive field.

In my 8 years of experience with Local SEO, this is the worst advice I have seen being handed out. It’s not the early days of internet where you Create a website and it will rank straight out.

Nowadays, for every microsite, you will have to do content, SEo, Backlinks etc.

A much easier approach for you is to have location pages for each service. If you want to expand the business to neighbour cities, you create new GMB listings for those cities and then tie them up with location pages for that city.

Everything should fall under one umbrella domain. I dunno why people still force micro sites when local SEO has been made so easy in recent times.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I would not create a micro site for additional services in the same city. You can put them all on the main page of your existing site. If you are trying to rank in additional cities that is another story. Ranking for the same services in another city on its own site might be easier but maintaining and ranking sites is not easy or cheap. You might want to consider expanding your google maps listings and focusing your efforts there! I can put you in touch with a guy that has got to be one of the best and he’s reasonable.

This strategy works, specially when you use EMD.

The biggest downside is that you never get to build a brand. And it also bothers the customers.

Instead, focus on building a brand. It would take extra time, but the ROI will be high. Create pages for each service, not websites. Create content around those pages to present you as an expert in the field. Do link building, PR, create YouTube videos for a broader coverage, join podcast. All these will help you build a brand.

    Just run from that agency.
