Law Offices of Donald B. Serafano Calling? Need some advice.
I’m hoping someone here has been through this before because I’m honestly a bit freaked out right now. I got a voicemail yesterday from someone at the Law Offices of Donald B. Serafano. The caller identified themselves and said they were calling “regarding a legal matter” and that I needed to call them back “immediately” to avoid further action. They didn’t mention a company name or a specific account, just left a case number and a number to call back.
I have some old credit card debt from a few years ago that I fell behind on when I lost my job, but it’s been a while and I honestly thought it was past the point where anyone would sue me over it. I haven’t received anything in the mail from them, no summons or letters, just this one phone call. So I’m trying to figure out if this is a real legal threat or just a scare tactic to get me to pay something I might not even owe anymore.
I googled their number and it seems like they are a real debt collection law firm. I’m terrified of saying the wrong thing on the phone and accidentally restarting the clock on an old debt or admitting to something I don’t have proof of. I also really can’t afford to be sued right now.
I guess my main questions are:
-
Should I call them back at all, or should I wait for something official in the mail?
-
Is it a mistake to talk to them on the phone without a lawyer present?
-
I heard there is a time limit for them to sue you for old debt. How do I find out if my debt is too old?
I just feel like I’m walking into a trap if I call them, but I also don’t want to miss a deadline if they have already filed something against me. Any advice from people who have dealt with this exact firm or a similar situation would be a huge help. What would you do in my shoes?
Thanks for reading.
