GuestFebruary 24, 2021 at 12:02 pmI think it depends on how you go about doing it and the reason as to why you’re doing it. There are valid reasons why links in comments are still useful but can be seen as spam if there are huge spikes.
I know big firms who did this practice and had their website removed for leaving comments that link back to their site.

GuestFebruary 24, 2021 at 2:34 pmAll depends on DR. So don’t bother if not. Google to knows how relevant a link is to your biz.
Write some quality content and get some real value instead.

If it is a “tactic” to “build links for ranking”. it will depends on many factors. Many SEOs think that Google markes these links as “user generated content”. That’s true, but not in the way that many SEOs mean. Nobody (even Googlers) knows how Google’s algos can evaluate links. Because it “depends on”. Google weighs different links differently. One link can be way more valuable than thousands of links because algos can ignore links. Here’s no tool to help you define which link would be valuable.
If it is a tactic of getting referral traffic, it is effective. You can get 1,000 (oh, 5,000) visitors per day from the one link. In many cases these links generate 1-100 visitors per day. But I mean these visitors are valuable visitors.

GuestFebruary 24, 2021 at 3:14 pmSince you’re asking in r/SEO, I assume you mean, “Will blog commenting improve my link profile and help my search ranking?”
To that, I would say, no. And I would point to one general rule for any other similar question you might ask: If you can create the link yourself on someone else’s site (blog comment, forum post/signature, etc.), without anyone else’s editorial approval, then you’ll get no SEO benefit as these kinds of links are very easy for Google to filter, and not the kind of links Google wants to see to increase your search visibility.
But there might be a number of other reasons you would want to comment on blogs, like relationship building or getting referral traffic from a specific audience. Commenting might work for that.
