If your Google Ads imported GA4 goal is showing lower revenue than the GA4 interface, try this fix!
If your payment gateways (e.g Paypal, Klarna) aren’t yet added as referral exclusions in GA4, this can mess up how the conversion value is reported within Google Ads as credit is given to the payment gateway.
We had an issue where certain GA4 reports were showing conversion value from Ads, but when we imported those goals into Ads it wasn’t reflecting that value, giving us much lower revenue.
We noticed an unusually high # of referrals in a different report (they all use different attribution). Excluding payment gateways fixed the revenue reporting issue. Of course this should be standard practice but not one of the most obvious things to remember in a switchover!
To find the referral source URLs in GA4:
1. Go to Engagement > Conversions, then click on the event, e.g purchase.
2. Click on ‘default channel group’, then select source instead.
3. Make a note of the payment gateway URLs here. Then to add them as exclusions (you’ll need editor role):
1. In Admin, click Data Streams in the Property column.
2. Click Web then click a web data stream.
3. At the bottom of the web stream details, click Configure tag settings.
4. In the Settings section, click Show all to see all available settings.
5. Click List unwanted referrals.
6. Under Include referrals that match any of the following conditions, choose a match type, enter the identifier for the domain you want to exclude (e.g. paypal.com) and click Add condition to add another domain.
7. Click save.Hopefully this will work for you guys too if you’re having trouble with getting conversion data within GA4 to match up with the imported conversion in Google Ads!
