How would you start to advertise a brand-new e-commerce business?

Posted by physiQQ on May 22, 2026 at 9:35 pm

I used to be a web developer, but after many years I have decided that I'm done with white-collar jobs and resigned. Instead, I started to build my own e-commerce webshop for made-to-measure window blinds and I am getting a lot of fulfilment from that. Fulfilment doesn't pay the bills however, so when I'm done developing the webshop next week, I'll have to get leads and clients in to hopefully earn some bread with it. It's already quite a saturated market, but I know the products and the manufacturers well from former experience, and I do enjoy the market.

I do have some experience with PPC (Google Ads and some Bing) from 2016-2023, but I didn't manage the campaigns all by myself. I mainly just analysed the data, gave suggestions and implemented the lead tracking logic, Google shopping feeds, etc. as we were a small company and I was responsible for developing the online store. From lurking here for a while from time to time, you guys are obviously way more knowledgeable than me, so who better to ask than you guys?

So my question to you is: How would you start out to get leads to a fresh webshop? I'm down to invest ~$3,000 on PPC, just to collect data and hopefully to get some sales and earn some money back to spend on more ads and to improve on them. Or would you not recommend me to do this solo and to just instantly invest in a pro? I'm curious to hear everyone's input. My goal is to just make $2k/month in profit, which is just enough to get by and do something I think I will truly enjoy for at least another decade.

    same boat few years back

start with search campaigns first – shopping feeds can wait. learn basics on smaller budget then scale up

Since most people search online for blinds, starting with Google Ads and their shopping campaign ad type would likely lead to the best outcome of getting conversions and revenue. Make sure you build the best shopping feed before you run ads but once those campaigns are working. You can can look at Google’s search campaign ad type next. Then move to Microsoft ads and scale up from there.

Start with Google shopping using a well structured product feed that is where window blinds buyers with intent already are

If it’s a brand new account, you can use a trick: PMax campaign, NO Assets, just the shopping feed. This will force the PMax to only advertise in Google Search. Set it to Maximize Conversion Value until you get 30-50 conversions. Then you can switch to Target CPA or ROAS.

Get a pro to set it up and educate you on all the steps they took and rationale around it. If you find the right person will fast track your learning
