I'm wanting to gain more of a following on my website where I write movie reviews and because I'm not great on camera I wanted to try to use X/Twitter. How many followers could a gain on X/Twitter tweeting about mostly movies and tv only I'm not writing movie reviews ? Like over the course of a year or two? 8,000? 18,000? And what should I talk about? I will note I'm not writing movie reviews on the X page alrhough I'll definitely link to the actual movie reviews I write, It would just mostly be me just giving my two cents here and there on various topics, trailers, movie news etc. How do a grow a following with that?

Twitter doesn’t reward link-dumping accounts; it rewards people who turn their opinions into a conversation that makes the website’s algorithm feel like it doesn’t need to send users elsewhere.

hmm… honest answer – the follower numbers you’re throwing out (8k, 18k) are very optimistic for a niche movie account that doesn’t show your face and isn’t writing reviews on the platform itself.

that said, movie Twitter is actually one of the better niches to be in. people are obsessed. the accounts that grow are the ones with strong opinions, not just news sharing. ‘here’s the trailer for X’ gets ignored. ‘here’s why the trailer for X looks terrible and everyone is wrong about the director’ gets engagement.

your website is a separate thing – don’t try to use Twitter to drive traffic to it, at least not yet. build the audience first by being interesting, then the link in bio does the work.

realistically if you’re consistent and actually opinionated, 2-3k in a year is achievable. 8k+ is possible but would take something going semi-viral at least once.

I’ve worked hard on twitter for a year and I only have 800 followers.

the ceiling is much higher than specific follower numbers like 8k or 18k if the account develops a recognizable voice and posting style over time.

Movie and TV discussion actually works very well on X because the platform rewards opinions, reactions, cultural commentary and real-time conversation around releases.

The bigger challenge is usually differentiation because entertainment Twitter is extremely crowded.

What tends to grow faster is not generic review posting, but having a recognizable angle or personality around the content like strong takes, humor, industry observations, underrated recommendations, scene analysis, box office discussion, writing insights or connecting movies to broader culture.

And honestly, consistency and timing matter more than production quality there. People follow accounts that become part of their daily entertainment conversation, not necessarily the most professional accounts.
