I mean, if your career puts you in the spotlight like politics does then yes you should 100% worry about what you’ve said in confidence and also online, particularly when you’re a major shitheel like JD Vance.

He would be in a position to have those views put into law so the public has every right to know.

Isn’t JD Vance informing them that he wrote about them in the book?

Did JD Vance have consent from his friend to write about them in the book?

If not, JD Vance betrayed his friend and broke their trust, not the other way round.

This isn’t really a social media issue as framed here. Anything stored digitally (emails, whatsapp, etc.) can be screenshot for later use. That’s something you have to understand when using the internet altogether. It remembers.

If someone wants to highlight something problematic I put out there years ago, so be it. I don’t believe I’ve said anything offensive, but certainly naive or self-centered in my younger years. I’ve learnt a lot since then, so am happy to be challenged about my past. JD Vance’s issue, conversely, is that he appeared to be understanding previously and has done a 180 for what seems like only political gain.

As for inauthenticity: yes that’s an issue. You only have to look at “Instagram vs reality” where people acknowledge the problem. Transparency is best. You can have both that and privacy. Although it doesn’t work if you’re a raging hypocrite.

If you’re trying to become one heartbeat away from becoming president of the United States, there should be no hiding place for your “views” — especially when your views illuminate your heartless, monstrous, brutal outlook on your fellow humans.
