Fort the freelancers out there, how did you become an Seo freelancer?

GuestNovember 7, 2020 at 2:47 pmI was working in-house as an SEO for a personal injury law firm. Another lawyer there had quit, and reached out to me about doing some work for him.
They had made me sign a non-compete contract like days earlier, so I convinced a friend of mine in marketing to take the contract and I would whitelabel the work.
Within say 6 months I had picked up a few more contracts, and the friend had as well. We made plans to start a small agency and I ended up quitting a few week later.
We split ways as business partners a couple of years later (I sold my half to him – he was a sociopath) and I started another agency I have successfully been running for the past 5 years.
It’s almost like I’ve done it twice!
The second time around it took me maybe twice as long to build up a similar book of business (he was more of a sales type) so maybe about a year to get to the point where I was pretty comfortable financially.

GuestNovember 7, 2020 at 6:54 pmI turned down a position with Google back when they were less than 200 employees.
Remained close with them (they used to have gatherings for partners) and learned about SEO. I was employed full time at a large consumer software company (was larger than Google at the time). Because of my position, I also was close to Excite@Home, AOL, Yahoo and Microsoft’s emerging efforts. (remember when Yahoo was using Google to provide search results?)
I also code front and back end (hobby) and applied that knowledge.
Because of this, I’ve kept up on SEO. Until the 2010’s , I only applied my skills as freelance to friends and family. Then I went on to an agency where I managed a top ten brokerage firm’s seo, Hard Rock Vegas, and many other large to individual sites SEO/PPC.
Now I’m out of it, doing other interests, freelancing SEO for fun to assist friends and family again.

GuestNovember 7, 2020 at 8:07 pmI was just a freelance writer. But, when I started to work with a guy who is a great SEO expert, I learned tactics that made me an SEO writer. So, that’s how I became a freelance SEO writer 🙂

GuestNovember 8, 2020 at 10:24 amI started with writing content and designing websites, and then added SEO to it after learning. I was already a freelance writer so already solo. One thing that helps is networking. If you know other SEOs entrepreneurs, or people in related field, that would help. Also, try freelance marketplaces – though many people kick against places like Upwork due to low paying jobs, they may be good for building your portfolio at the start.
