Competitor suddenly gained 20k backlinks from high DA websites in one month? How, and is that good?
Posted by on January 22, 2023 at 1:54 pmI use Ahrefs to monitor backlinks for my client and their competitors. Noticed one particular competitor gained over 20K backlinks from high DA websites (between 50-100). How does that happen and is that even good?

DA doesn’t mean anything
Also they’re probably spammy
Quantity doesn’t mean quality -
I’ve a portfolio of +37k vendor sites with high DA from 80+ to 90+ with all niches and from my experience It is possible to have these much backlinks through link insertions in the already published articles on these sites.

Spikes in links is way more “natural” then consistent steady growth.
High DA links doesn’t really mean anything. You need to spend some time actually looking at the links. They might just be trash like profile links and user generated content. Or it could be they have a really good marketing team or PR firm working for them getting some good content / newsworthy stories out there that people are writing about.
There is a huge difference in the effectiveness of the two.

Filter them by search traffic and you’ll have a better idea of the quality of those backlinks.
DA on its own can easily be manipulated.

It seems odd but its also down to how AHREFS picked them up. Also, if they’re sitewide or auto-published on a lot of pages coming from a few domains, then its not so strange – there are a lot of sites that publish content on templates and link out – it doesnt make it bad or unnatural.
Again, just so little detail for anyone to actually comment on….

What are the anchors? Any redirects in place?
If I was doing to do that, I would buy a competing company’s site, merge the content/products to my site, and 301 redirect all the links. Bam, 20K links gained overnight.

Do any of their back links rank for any keywords? If not, they aren’t in Google’s index and literally don’t exist to Google and won’t do a thing. I’d even argue they would hinder their EAT or EEAT or EEEEEEEEAT. 😉 But, perhaps not noticeably.

20k links in a month is the type of activity google penalizes

It’s possible. If they received local news coverage or issued a particularly compelling press release that actually got picked up and published, particularly globally, you can reach these numbers. Only certain brands can be interesting enough for that to happen though.

I don’t even need to explain or ask about those backlinks and I can easily say “NO”
It’s just wasting time even your might hurt your website ranking

If the backlinks are part of relevant and contextual content, they will give a boost to the SERP ranking and authority. But irrelevant backlinks even on high DA sites may not do much good. Google can detect backlink spamming quite easily.

Domain Authority means nothing. It’s a tool created by a 3rd party.
