  • Commenting Hashtags vs Directly on Post

Is there a difference between adding hashtags directly on a post/caption versus commenting those hashtags to the post? I’ve been doing this for a while because I don’t like the look and clutter of them being directly in the caption. But if this causes less engagement/views, then I need to bite the bullet and just add them in the caption.

I personally add them in the caption, and many of the big marketing accounts I follow on Instagram do the same.

Perhaps you could do a test, 5 posts with them in the caption, 5 in the comments.

Then you will at least know what is best for your account!

I’ve seen a lot of information saying it doesn’t matter in terms of performance, but each has pros and cons. If you have them in your caption you can get analytics on the hashtags. If it’s in the comments it’s cleaner to the eye. I read something recently that I hadn’t thought about but I think it’s also something to consider (I think it really only applies if posting manually). It said if you are using highly populated hashtags that in the time it takes you to add the hashtags to the comment, your post might have already been pushed too far down in the recent section for the tags to be of use. Just a few musings, hope that helps!

In terms of functionality, posting hashtags in the caption or in the comments does not offer any difference. But here’s a thing-if you include numerous hashtags in an engaging caption with a call-to-action (CTA) command or question, people may get distracted with it and therefore won’t be able to go after the desired action.

But it still depends on what your preference would be. You can either try posting some with hashtags in the caption and some others in the comments, and assess by yourself the engagements it generated.
