  • Can someone describe how to actually perform link building (not the theory)

Posted by Hey_nice_marmot_ on March 7, 2023 at 11:53 am

I’m not an SEO but I’m somehow in charge of the SEO at my B2B company.

We all know that backlinks are an important part of off-page SEO. The theory is that if you create great content, people will magically link to it and your content will thrive.

But from what I can tell, link building seems to have merely moved from paying for backlinks on poor quality spam sites in the 2010s to paying for backlinks on reputable sites at a higher price? Is that an oversimplification?

I appreciate that many SEO’s want to give them impression that all of this is organic and comes about through hard work and great content, but realistically, it seems like it’s more about creating great content and then paying a lot of money for decent sites to link to it. Is that fair?

We have a lot (65+ articles) of great, well-researched, long-form (1,000 – 1,500 word) content that passes all SEO tests and optimised up to 2023 standards. We are regularly adding new content. Our site is well optimised for SEO, so it seems that link building is the only thing holding us back.

Is there a current link building strategy guide that anyone can recommend online that gives a breakdown of how I should approach link building in 2023? Thanks!

Search “Best + Keyword”. Email the article author + blog and ask for a post.

In most cases, you won’t naturally get backlinks just because you created a stellar post. You need to actually do outreach to other sites that you’re trying to acquire backlinks from.

Find a piece of content that you want to outrank, identify the backlinks that it has, create a better piece of content, reach out to the sites that link to the competing site and ask them to link to you instead because your content is “better/has updated info/etc”.

Or, you can guest post. Meaning, you create content for another website and provide it to them for free, but include a link back to your site within that content.

If you have Ahrefs a good way to find good link Building opportunities (and not just link Building opportunities) is to put your domain and then select the organic competitors Tab.

Then choose one, go to their backlink profile page and put the filter with DA>10 and in context link, and traffic >500 and “dofollow”. This way you can see the good links of your competitors, copy paste those in a spreadsheet. Do the same for the other showed organic competitors: you’ll end up with a good list overall, but you have to check that their site Is an actual site.
Those are the links that are ranking your competitors, and excluding very High profile editorial links (hard to get a Forbes or a newspaper link generally) you might have a chance to get a link as well with outreach.
Search for their contact page or footer for the email and try (or use a dedicated tool for finding emails), I mean email copy Is important as well but I recommend to Watch Matt diggity or Ahrefs Channel for link Building outreach templates, and in general I recommend to personalise your email as much as you can for the receiver in order to not make It look as spam.

Beyond that (you can do that on Semrush as well, they have similar interfaces) there are obviously other tactics but this comment Is already long enough lol, btw I find lots of useful info on Backlinko and Matt Diggity stuff, as well as Ahrefs and Matthew Woodward.
Hope this helps you, btw just shoot me a message if you want to ask more info, I’ll try to answer asap.

    Keyword + “guest blog”|
    Keyword + “write for us”

    Use Haro

Reach out to sites that you have synergies with for collaboration, etc.

You can also buy them. Some companies do this work for you, the outreach and the writing of the content and so forth. They’re not cheap. I mean a couple hundred per link at least. But it’s “proper” back linking. It’s just outsourcing other people $15 p/h to do the leg work instead of paying the $50 p/h guy to do it.

I’m in a group where most use HARO (help a reporter out) where reporters will request people in different niches for their expert opinion and link back to the site. It’s free and some people get epic links from news sites and the likes.

    Ask yourself

How many times in your career have you linked an article on your website to another website. Outside of say a Government resource or very large company brand? Like never.

With this in mind, how much value do you think Google truly puts on backlinks?

Only noobs pay for backlinks, if you build great search intent pages, you’ll get organic links without you even having to ask for them.

65 articles is not that much unfortunately. I think you should focus on creating more content. Depending on your niche you could expand the site. Does your product/service have multiple features – if yes make an optimized page for each feature. Do you serve multiple industries/sectors – make a page for each industry. Are case studies an option?

Just want to start by saying 1,000-1,500 words is on the short side, if you have all that content, there has got to be a good number of posts that could stand another 500-1000 words.

You can find out with different tools how many words the top 10 ranking sites for a specific keyword are on average.

Making your content this length is a good idea, it means it’s what Google expects from that keyword

Are you doing extensive keyword research before writing content?

You can’t just write whatever you feel like writing, you have to let the data dictate your actions – ALWAYS

Gotta go after keywords that you have a realistic chance to rank for too, based on your backlinks and authority.

You don’t have to buy backlinks though.

Everything you write needs to provide value to the user.

Every article needs to be completely about that keyword too.

When you provide value, ppl will link to you.

It helps if you give away a lead magnet or have a tool on the page

An example of this could be some kind of calculator relevant to your niche and the keyword.

Personally I’ve never bought backlinks and still have backlinks.

I’ve also outranked multi billion dollar companies without backlinks.

Hell, I’ve even outranked Amazon a couple times for products, it was accidental but still.

Just dumb luck really but that doesn’t take away from my research or the thorough content that makes me money still almost every day.

Bro, Target the right keywords. If you have a new site, go for 1-10 KD -if possible.

Some agencies offer outreach programs so you can outsource this if you don’t have experience here. There are directory listings like Yelp etc if you are reliant on local search for your business so those are quite straightforward and you can also find ones specifically for your industry that can be free or sometimes paid for
