  • You Can Recover From HCU Damage With Next Core Update :: Google

Google once again said you can recover from the damage inflicted on your site by the September 2023 helpful content update with the next core update. Danny Sullivan, the Google Search Liaison, said on X, "Yes, people who have had impacts with core ranking updates may see changes (if our systems believe they've improved) after the next broad one we have."

Sullivan was not able to say when that next core update will happen but he said when it does and if enough changes are made to your site, than you can recover with that next core update.

Sullivan posted on X in response to this question:

    QUESTION:

Hey Searchliaison is there any rough estimate on the next core update, please? If I remember correctly JohnMu suggested recovery from the HCU could be possible with the next one (maybe even before) but it’s very tough to stay positive right now with our visibility suppressed.

    ANSWER:

I know people keep referring to the helpful content system (or update), and I understand that — but we don't have a separate system like that now. It's all part of our core ranking systems.

Which leads to, yes, people who have had impacts with core ranking updates may see changes (if our systems believe they've improved) after the next broad one we have. This explains more about that.

I don't have timing to share, but we do them several times during the year.

Anyone that actually believes in what Danny Sullivan or John Mueller say at this point are delusional.

Depends what you mean by “recover”. Anybody significantly hit by any update is only going to recover by fundamentally changing their approach and their historical issues.

Anybody who sits there expecting the next update to put them back where they were, without doing anything to change the situation, is going to be very disappointed.

Danny Sullivan and John Mueller specialize in the words could, may, might, possibly and perhaps.

They never say anything to hang your hat on.

In other words, it’s all blah, blah, blah to keep you interested in improbable possibilities.

People who were impacted may see changes after the next update if their site has improved. Riveting

Some people have recovered from the Sept 2023 updates, but so far no one has recovered from the March 2024 updates.

Or you could simply do nothing and see what happens. That’s been my strategy since last September. Took a hit in September and made a few minor changes and recovered about 80% by January. Then took another hit in March, did nothing and almost fully recovered by early May.

So as of now, I’m down about 10-15% from a year ago. I know it could change tomorrow but I give it very little thought. Unlike other site owners, my website is not my main source of income but it is nice to have.

It’s insane how much influence Google has on the entire online economy.

At present, there is basically no recovery from the HCU algorithm. Instead, there are many cases where traffic continues to drop.

Danny Sullivan is like the prophet of a doomsday cult that continues to preach the end of the world and all his followers say “meh” each time he’s caught in a lie.

Well there is going to be an update in July, like two major updates. One involves Google My Business profile, where some businesses have different branches and different subdomains to help with their services like “bedfordshire. companyname.uk”. Google said, the GMB won’t work for subdomains from july, we would’ve to build different GMB profiles for each in order for ads and ratings etc… Then there is Mobile Indexing Update on July 5th, I think someone posted about that here recently. The Mobile Indexing Update has the possibility to affect large chunk of non responsive websites. Apart from this, they’ve updated the Google Reputation Policy recently which also has been affecting websites traffic, that used data from other websites, and repurposed textual content.

So I don’t think, there will be another major update soon. As they’ve already pushed a core update in April – May, expectation could be around Oct-Nov if there is another core update. Just a wild guess. Personal piece of advice, make sure you’re ready to dance for their whims and the chaos is yet to come.
