  • Will Social Media ever fade?

We know that nothing is immortal. Quite true, isn’t it? We have been living in the era of social media. Will it ever fade? Will people ever have life without mobile phones?

The idea of communicating with others will never fade. It’s within the fabric of humanity. Social media is the most effective way to do that right now. So, until something else comes along that we can leverage to communicate more efficiently, social media will remain important.

It’s unlikely social media will fade anytime soon. What we will see is social media evolve into other forms, just as we’ve seen it go from MySpace to Facebook, to Instagram, etc. But the idea of being connected online with your friends, family and followers is not going anywhere.

It was always around, just named something else. Basically before the internet, there were connector type people that would essentially do what we do now online with social media. A mixture of print, video, music, events, networking has been around forever.

As soon as going online came around, but before the internet as we know it, there were BBS’s where we could call up other computers and post messages, play games, etc.

Then AOL came which was a rudimentary internet social network. Then came Friendster and MySpace.

So basically social media has always been around and grown larger. There’s no way or reason it could fade away. Only companies and website popularity change. For example, Facebook and Instagram are on their way out, they and the world just don’t know it yet.

Not any time soon at least. We’re still learning about social as more new features are implemented and new methods of communicating may always change.

I think the reach of it eventually will.

I am under 30 and definitely notice in my generation that me and a lot of my friends who’s grew up on it (like we were all on facebook as 13yos in 2007) are “disconnecting” more and more- whether thats deleting completely, or just not being very active, and many younger people typically jump around on more temporary platforms- tiktok, tumblr, snapchat.

I don’t think it will ever go away- but I think it will decline in this necessary thing- like for example, Network TV. Millions of people still watch it, we know the basic characters and premises of hit shows, but the days of a Network TV show being the cultural barometer are long gone. Like TV, social media will probably fragment out into smaller, non-bundled services- more niche products and less overall “activity”- but still a hugely significant part of life.

Personally after growing up on social media- I don’t want to delete any of my profiles, but I am not super active on it or want to be. It really is horribly toxic and messy, and the idea of someone digging up who I was at 13-15 and using it against me as an adult is legit terrifying. If I could go back and not be on social media, For that reason alone, I would wish I never had been. But- I feel far safer and happier being on platforms like Instagram and TikTok- where I’m not being forced to assemble a lot of real life information on myself. Sure, the companies can see all my data- but I like posting just pictures and videos and not having to put my job or school on it if I don’t want to? On Facebook it felt like you had to do that- and YouTube being also really big when I was starting on social media, you very much had to put a lot of yourself into your content. On IG or TikTok, I can post a picture, or do a little dance challenge and use the messaging features to talk with trusted people. I have encountered creeps and weirdos, but it’s a lot easier to manage what information they can access on these types of platforms.

But, it’s like drinking. Everything in moderation is okay, knowing your limits and sobering up from addiction if you struggle with that is key.

I’d be interested to hear what y’all have to say, but I could see it becoming more segmented in a way. Almost as of each subreddit had their own app. This would be for like big groups such as hobbies etc…

Some inventions are made to stay. When we invented electricity it didn’t fade away, or when we invented the wheel or mirrors, or… there’s probably better examples. What I mean is that there’s quite a lot of stuffs that we got pretty dependent on from the moment it was invented until now, and I don’t see them fading away. Only if we came up with a better way of filling their functions!

Comms evolve with every modal shift in tech. Social is here til we start communicating via implant, telepathically, etc

When the diminishing returns of it crop up, yes. The only way out is through. Accelerationism. The more grassroots apps are made for ppl to talk, the more it’ll all just implode.

The big players will change but I doubt it will go away fully. Lowkey bothers me how people are jumping on the TikTok bandwagon with no regard for privacy but they’re starting to overtake Facebook so I’m glad for that

I don’t think so, over the time technology is evolving. Things are getting more advanced and the phone is one of the essentials. In my opinion, still, there are high chances that social media will rise.

I don’t think it will go away, but communities will be more and more fragmented and less targetable by big central companies like Facebok.
