Will a narrated option on your blog decrease ranking?
I’m no SEO expert but if I understand correctly, Google looks at the relevant keywords inside the content (title, heading, paragraph) of your page to rank you.
Now, suppose I want to encourage users to fully read my blog article, but my target audience happens to lead busy lives. If I embed an audio (narrated) version of the blog article, I find that users are more likely to engage with the page, perhaps because it’s easier for them to play the narrated version of said blog article in the background while doing something else than sitting down and reading the whole article.
This understandably will decrease the scroll depth and perhaps Google Analytics will think that the user is not engaged with the site.
Do you think that users listening to an embedded audio rather than reading the article will make my rankings drop?

How far users scroll down your page is EXTREMELY unlikely to be a ranking factor / data Google have access to to make ranking decisions IMO. Time on site/page/before bounce-back, maaaybe… but still very speculative.

It will improve rankings of anything. If users are spending more time on your site that’s a good sign.

Time on page is more important than where on page haha 🙂

Think (UX) first! Does it fulfill the purpose of why users would land on that page? Then do it! Ranking #1 and providing no value to users who won’t get anything out of your page or take whatever action=$ for you is an exercise in futility.

Dwell time would be far more valuable than scrolling. I don’t think scrolling is a factor but if you’re concerned about that you could have a jump link to the bottom of the page for audio, but I’d split test whether people use it before rolling out a change like that.
