‘Back in the day’ it used to be funny content like dancing videos for example or just memes, now it’s very political. What has been causing all of this?

It’s the new cult of trump. It’s more than a political following. People are practically worshipping that bitch.

Didn’t it all start with conservative radio like Rush Limbaugh and naturally spread to internet/ social media. Add in the 24 hour news cycle and here we are .

Controversial content such as politics generates more engagement on social media. The more controversial, the more engagement. Social media algorithms push high performing/ highly engaged content to the top of feeds (it’s in social media companies’ interest to keep you on platform for as long as possible so they can show you ads/ gather your data). Top of people’s feeds = more people see it = more people engage. Rinse and repeat

Russians and Cambridge Analytica both used social media to their own favor to help Trump “win” his election, ironically taking a cue from Obama who used it so successfully in 2008. They’re basically trying to recreate that scenario since it’s an election year.

However compared to the way elections used to be covered back when the media still had near-total control just seeing a few rants or ads about it is waaayyyyy less invasive than hearing about the election every 2 minutes from every TV in every public place because for a whole year beforehand it was all any news station could f**kng talk about

I’m really not sure what’s the purpose of this question. There is no such thing as something being apolitical.

Look at the TikTok ban that was legislated in response to the situation in Gaza to suppress how younger generations receive news/propaganda. Look at how Cambridge Analytica and Meta use social media platforms to stroke hatred and division in countries to sway elections.

Social media is both a cultural and political tool, both being deeply intertwined, just as all types of media (/art) have been. Politics, and the systems and cultures that get created in our societies (including social media) from our politics, affect every aspect of our lives. Work, food, environment, etc.

So if your asking why people are more concerned about or abetting the way society is moving towards economic collapse, totalitarianism, genocide, climate catastrophe through social media channels, instead of posting funny dance videos then it’s time to start asking some deeper questions.

If you are (currently) privileged enough to not have to deal with the brunt of the fallout from these issues then that something to look at. Being apolitical is only for those who are either apathetic to the above and/or don’t suffer the consequences of it which most working class people around the world do.

Outrage keeps people reading social media. There’s always something to be mad or scared of.

Money in politics funding the change. Inevitable.

Social media has become more political due to societal polarization, the rise of social activism, and algorithms that prioritize controversial content, shifting away from the lighter, fun content of the past.

Facebook helped drive a whole genocide in Myanmar in 2017. It’s been like this for a while, it’s just harder to ignore now.

You have politics on your feed because the algorithm obviously thinks that you are interested in politics… 😂
