Why do so many entertainers use social media to promote themselves, when it’s private to the public and everyone can see what you looked at?
Posted by MartyMacFlies on October 1, 2024 at 12:02 pmSo many times I've wanted to find out more about a music act I was interested in, but couldn't because their only pages are Instagram or Facebook – completely hidden to the public (requiring a sign up). And if you sign up, everything you look at is visible to everyone you've ever met on there, which is just a privacy nightmare. So why do entertainers promote themselves using these sites, instead of just using public sites anyone can view without it being announced to your friends?

GuestOctober 1, 2024 at 12:11 pmA lot of entertainers use social media because it’s a powerful tool for building their brand and connecting with fans directly. While it can feel invasive, platforms like Instagram and Facebook offer features that allow for personal engagement, which can help them grow their audience and maintain a loyal fan base. They might also find it easier to share updates, new releases, and behind-the-scenes content where their followers can interact in real time. Plus, the advertising capabilities on these platforms are effective for promoting their work. It’s a trade-off between privacy and visibility.

GuestOctober 1, 2024 at 12:14 pmMany entertainers use social media to connect with fans directly and build a following. While privacy concerns are valid, these platforms offer better engagement and visibility than public sites and making them essential for promotion….

You kind of answered it yourself, because they want to own your friends for free.

GuestOctober 1, 2024 at 1:49 pmyea that’s a solid question man. i think a lotta entertainers use platforms like instagram n facebook bc they’ve already got huge user bases, so it’s easy to reach fans n build a following fast. plus, social media gives them tools for interacting w ppl directly—comments, likes, shares, you name it. but yea, the whole privacy thing is kinda wild, especially with how much data’s out there. not sure why more don’t use open platforms like a personal website or blog that’s more accessible. prob just comes down to what gets them the most eyes on their stuff the quickest

GuestOctober 1, 2024 at 2:50 pmWhat kind of public sites would you recommend? I work in social media marketing for record labels and artists and couldn’t imagine any public sites that would offer the same engagement or reach. Youtube is a great resource for new music but hard to share any other info on unless you have time to be an artist and vlogger (not likely).
SUPER open to suggestions because if we’re missing something I would love to know lol

GuestOctober 1, 2024 at 2:59 pmSo, hey Marty… I think you are either underestimating, or missing a couple key factors here. Not everyone is like you. Hyper aware of privacy, a clear understanding of everything you post on Social, or look at, is so widely available to everyone and anyone. How Social Media Platforms (Like META) basically owns your online presence (You are the product, not the customer) Only about 30% of social media users actually ‘get’ that fact (those facts) –SO, with that in mind, Meta has the ability to get you, your brand, your product, everything, out to literally billions of eyes very quickly and efficiently. That’s the biggest part of “Why” — but to add what The Messier Side said in this post… Where would you prefer to see your favorite artists exist in the social sphere? When you want to find out more, where do you look first? And where are you most disappointed to see them missing from?

It seems that you are unfamiliar with the way these sites work. Your search history / what you view on Instagram isn’t posted for others to see.

GuestOctober 1, 2024 at 3:25 pmSocial media has become basically a foregone conclusion for any up-and-coming artist. It’s a mutually-beneficial relationship because it allows them to directly engage with their fans, and when you engage with them, your connections can find out about them too.

GuestOctober 1, 2024 at 4:46 pmThe exclusivity of account-only social platforms isn’t always a negative thing. When you talk about musicians, a lot of them use facebook because they rely a smaller number of more dedicated fans that provide direct support [tickets, merch, cover charges], and they usually perform within a set geographic community, which platforms like Facebook are usually pretty good at promoting within.
I do agree with you, at this point, social platforms exist to license data and push ads. But, they’re the tool that artists are familiar with, and until something else comes along that better thats not going to change.
