  • Why do sites make you scroll so much? Are they trying to boost engagement metrics?

We all know sites that use the “recipes” method, where you find their page for an informational query and then have to scroll allllll the way to the bottom of the page, past dozens of different H2s and dozens of ads and CTAs. Is there a legit strategy behind this? Not interested in emulating, but am curious — does forcing users to scroll help time-on-page (which I don’t think is a ranking factor?) or is just to boost conversions or ad views, or something else?

A mix of what you suggest.

Additional keywords for SEO purposes, more space for ads, more chance of an accidental click on an ad, better page dwell time for performance metrics.

Dwell time is a ranking factor.

    It is called user engagement.

    This is from Google.

User engagement is the amount of time someone spends with your web page in focus or app screen in the foreground, which allows you to measure when users actively use your site or app.

    They track this. Trust me!

    I hope this helps

You’d have to task them to find out. Some are just noobs that don’t know any better, and copy what they think is right, while others have a legit strategy for what they’re doing.

They do it for reasons that do not benefit the user and it’s why AI is going to kill recipe websites. I don’t need a 2000 word history of bread to get a recipe

Just because people know how to build web pages and sell ads doesn’t mean they know anything about user experience. For me, this is the answer to a great number of issues I read in this sub.

They do it so that you get more ad impressions. All of these sites run off of ad revenue and some are paid for each ad impression, so they want you to scroll way down to page in order to find the full ingredient list. It’s got nothing to do with rankings.
