Why do people use SEMrush for Google Ads?

Posted by Charizard_zard on October 7, 2024 at 3:36 am

I often see many advertisers suggesting the use of SEMrush for Google Ads, but I’m not sure why they recommend it when Keyword Planner seems to do the job well. What is the purpose of SEMrush, and how does it help with Google Ads? SEMrush is expensive and popular, so I really want to know how I can take advantage of it while running Google Ads.

It shows you the spend. You can see how much approximately your competition is spending on Google Ads and the trend of their spend. You can literally pull up any competition you have in mind and see their spend there. You can’t do it in keyword planner.

Tip: just post it in this sub and skip the other Google ads, AdWords ones. Those are dead in terms of engagement

SEMRush destroyed SKAG. All those hero non-brand terms are all exposed on SEMRush. This is why this year many of the SKAG and Max Click strategies are not working. Your competitors got SEMRush entered your URL and found out all your hero non-brand terms.

As defense you should be using STAG, so your not as exposed.

Hello! We know that navigating Google Ads can be challenging, and while Google Keyword Planner is useful, Semrush offers additional features to enhance your advertising strategy.

One of our strengths is **competitor analysis**. With Semrush, you can see what your competitors are doing—analyzing their keywords, ad copy, and estimated budgets.

Our **keyword research** provides detailed insights on search volume, keyword difficulty, and trends, helping you discover valuable long-tail keywords.

The **Ad History** tool gives you inspiration for your ad copy by showcasing actual ads from competitors. We also analyze **landing pages** linked to your ads, offering optimization suggestions to improve user experience and conversion rates.

With robust **tracking and reporting**, you can monitor ad performance and optimize your campaigns effectively. Our **audience insights** help you understand your target audience’s interests for more relevant ads.

Hope it helps, let us know if you have any questions. – Vic

The main benefit for Google Ads is to understand what competitors are in the space, what creatives they are running, and what keywords they are targeting. On this last point you may discover keyword themes you haven’t thought of yet for your campaign.

Of course there are other tools such as keyword planner, ChatGPT, Google’s transparency tool that get you most of this information. The main feature of SEMrush is competitor identification if you don’t already know who they are.

SEMRush can be very helpful, in my experience, with Google Ads. Used to be more helpful when they also offered the Display Network insights as included, not an extra charge.

Spend on SEMRush however is wildly inaccurate. Try and compare your known spend levels and you’ll see.

Where I find it useful is keyword gap analysis and competitor research.
