I think having a specialty in a particular niche helps – don’t discount that. Especially in the very specific niches.

I’d suggest focusing on their track record, transparency in strategy, and whether they set realistic goals. It’s easy to get caught up in the sales pitch, but look for those who show you actual data and case studies. I prefer tools like SEMrush and Ahref to check rankings myself, but I’ve been leaning towards SERPtag lately because it’s more affordable and gets the job done. I’d say whether you go with a specialist or a company depends on your budget and how personalized you want the service to be.

If they recommend anything that is not your primary business, tell them no.

totally get how the sales pitch can sway your decision. when picking an seo company, focus on a few key things: look beyond the traffic numbers and ask about how they’ve improved actual conversions, not just visits. transparency is crucial too – make sure they’re providing clear, regular reporting and being upfront about their methods. avoid anyone making big promises like “guaranteed #1 rankings” because that’s usually a red flag. lastly, make sure their approach is focused on long-term growth, not just quick fixes, since those can end up hurting you later

as for choosing between a specialist or a company, it depends on what you need. specialists can offer more personalized attention, but companies usually have more tools and resources at their disposal. hope that helps!

I’ve been in the same boat for a while , OP. I tried an agency and tried hiring internally as well.

    What I learnt was –
    1. It’s important you have someone who understand the common search phrases or prompts your target audience would likely search. Whether it’s an agency or someone internal, both are fine , but an internal person is more likely to understand your audiences better. This also depends on the industry and your target audience, needless to say there should be a match between your offerings and target audience , else every effort is a waste.

    2. Your website , social media and SEO are linked together. Make sure all 3 initiatives are running in the same direction with the goal of converging at one common point. Hence organisationally, having these 3 teams working together is ideal , else you are simply delaying the timeline for your desired SEO results.

    3. SEO takes time, plan finances for atleast 2 years to see positive results. In the meantime , work on getting your basic SEO optimised website and social media accounts running , which is no small task either but a necessary pre requisite for a successful SEO campaign.

    4. My solution was hiring a team for 3-5 people who will handle all these things for you , it will cost the same as an agency but the internal people will be in a better position to get things done as they understand your business and customers better , and don’t have multiple clients to work with. Ofc, they need to be technically sounds and preferably understand your industry well.

Only if you dont have the time or expertise to hire or filter people , then go for an agency but try your best to bridge above gaps.

    Thanks and good luck!

The agencies you are talking to put the majority of revenue into sales and marketing while the actual seo work will be done by a couple guys in the Philippines.

I’m not trying to be outrageous or funny. I’m being serious

You want an agency with a small sales staff or none at all because the revenue should go for top SEO talent, not sales talent

You want an agency based in the US and get something in writing that the actual SEO work will be done by a US citizens.

Business owners keep falling for this same trap over and over.

    Excellent sales people=run away
