For Ecommerce products pages that are no longer active (either out of stock or discontinued)

What should be the proper way to deal with them? If Google Search Console marks it as a crawl error,

    Should we

    1. Disable / delete these pages and cause a 404? My understanding is that 404 pages get crawled less often and eventually they get dropped from the link index.

    2. 301 redirect all these links to homepage? Keeps link juice and user on the website but may impact page loading time?

Create a discontinued product design and use that page to cross-sell “similar product”. i.e. this product is no longer available but here are 3-5 alternatives that you may like, similar price for a coupleof products, one cheaper and one more expensive one. Make sure that you remove it from brokarege page (view all) but keep it live. Some people have the products bookmarked and order repeatedly from you. That is your chance to increase your sales with discontinued products

Ideally you’d redirect the page somewhere useful to the customer. Here are your options in order of preference.

    1) Keep the page live as u/Arthur1465 suggested while cross referencing similar products.

    2) Redirect to a newer model.

    3) Redirect to the sub-category page.

    4) Redirect to the home page.

    5) let it 404, crawl in hell, google!
