What should be the next step?

Posted by seohelper on May 13, 2020 at 12:34 pm

    Hey guys,

this sub helped me so many times and is one of my go-to sources for specific topics and questions. Today I’m in search of career advice. I am completely overwhelmed by advices and information, coming from my closest environment – nobody with PPC or marketing background at all.

    Some background information about me:
26 years old, male, university-entrance diploma with focus on economics and administration, completed training as a Business administrator for marketing Communications (it is an Austrian based education level).

I started as a trainee at my current company, a gaming app publisher and finished the training successfully after 2 years. Performance marketing was mainly driven by affiliate marketing back then and I got hired as a Junior Affiliate Manager.

Affiliate marketing was volatile in terms of ROI and growth and comparing big event lists to detect ad fraud, was our daily business.
My CEO just wiped 70% of the staff out back then. I got lucky and had the opportunity of setting up Paid Social and PPC channels, it took me some time to understand everything and to optimize and scale accordingly. In the beginning of 2019, I got promoted as a “Social Advertising Manager” and in the beginning of 2020 I got promoted once again as the Head of Performance Marketing.

From 2019 to 2020 I scaled net profit for our main product by 9000% and justified an increase of monthly ad spend from 50K in 2019 to 500K in 2020.
I just reached a point where I would rather focus on optimizing onboarding processes and towards in-app micro conversions with big drop offs. I just like the idea of behavioral economics and improving user experiences with science.
Unfortunately, this mindset is not implemented in this company and our tech team is slow, and they do not like changes, which is super frustrating sometimes. Besides that, I get paid well, got a company car, and I am somehow my own boss and have a lot of leeway when it comes to decision-making – my CEO is trusts me 100%. There is still room for further promotions.

I recently received a job offer for the Head of Growth position from a fintech start up in the real estate section. I do manage my own ETF portfolios and the whole finance world is one of my biggest passions, so I would take this offer in consideration. The offer even stated that they would pay an accompanying degree in finance/computer science.
My close environment keeps telling me to take this opportunity. I would agree but I really like my current job, although my learning process is artificially slowed down by the tech team. I really need a honest opinion in this.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the wall of text.

Do what feels right, if you think you have hit the celling at current role, move on.

Its always time to move on when you are comfortable.

Just don’t ever get a job at an agency and you’ll be fine.

    Good luck.

Sounds like a good opportunity at the other company. Beyond salary, take into account vacation days, sick days and health care and those bits. Make sure this FinTech has good reviews on Glass Door and employee sites like that. Take it all with a grain of salt but at least it gives you another lens to look at the offer.

If you have not, find out the terms related to paying for that degree in finance/computer science… do you need to stay at the company for a certain length of time afterwards.

I would interview a few people you would be working with and maybe someone from the customer success and the engineering teams. See what they think working at the company is like. There is more to a job then salary and if they will pay for your degree, which is awesome of course.
