What don’t you like about professional networking / social media platforms?
Posted by unknownstudentoflife on July 29, 2024 at 6:31 pmHi there, im a psychology student doing research about social media networking platforms as well as professional networking platforms for a research.
For this research i have to talk to users of different platforms to try to understand what problems they encounter in terms of professional online networking & connection making.
I would love to know your personal experience's since this would be very helpful for my research project!

GuestJuly 29, 2024 at 7:07 pmHi, I hope I can be helpful 🙂
I used LinkedIn as a professional networking site. I don’t contact other people to make connections because I’m too nervous. If I don’t know them, I don’t like them seeing what I’m up to (similarly to personal social media use). I feel so jealous and upset if I look at it for too long (all my friends graduated this year but I’m doing a year in industry so I graduate next year). I feel as though I’m not keeping up with how smart everyone else is, it’s demoralising.
For me, it’s how I react to the site / feed. -

GuestJuly 29, 2024 at 10:07 pmI hate when people that I don’t know send me invites on Linkedin, bro, it’s supposed to be for people you already met. And I also hate that everyone is always bragging about themselves and their achievements.

GuestJuly 29, 2024 at 11:20 pmCan’t stand how some folks DM immediately to offer some random SEO or biz dev opportunity straight after a connection. But I mean it’s easy enough to ignore

GuestJuly 30, 2024 at 8:40 amGetting random connection requests from people who immediately pitch their product/service is so annoying. I just want to network, not get spammed.

GuestJuly 30, 2024 at 3:18 pmNetworking and social media can be a drag with all the self-promotion and fake smiles. It feels like everyone’s just trying to one-up each other instead of actually connecting. Plus, the constant need to be “on” and engage is pretty exhausting, tbh. It’s a lot of noise mixed with some real opportunities…

GuestJuly 30, 2024 at 4:14 pmI use instagram, reddit, and facebook to network with other artists because I’m introverted and shy in “real life”. I also use them to share my work because I want to bring joy to people who appreciate that kind of thing. I’m actually pretty content with the experience on Reddit and Facebook but the frustrating thing about instagram is they seem to just lock my posts up in a black hole instead of showing them to people. I have a 9-5 job (that I love) so I don’t really have the time to figure out the algorithm. And I’m not really inclined to play their game. I’m just trusting things will shift eventually and that the people who are meant to see my work will see it when it’s their time.

GuestJuly 30, 2024 at 5:20 pmI’ll chip in as been using social media networks since they started. For myself I have usually not paid any attention to the algorithm, anyway, kind of things I like as a consumer of media, goods and services on them. Is a wide range of interests to carry me off somewhere, and chat with people that are interested in same subject. I have found the sharing across platforms has become less trusting over years.
I remember when Google, Facebook, X, Pinterest etc. all allowed data sharing/syncing at the consumer level, now I find the platform almost at war with each other and they block out links from each other over advertising, rather than sharing knowledge- example could be sharing an outbound link in or out of any platform getting a person deboosted, not for being nasty but because there is some sort of business feud going on in the background, I got suspended once for using music on YouTube that suddenly got banned by the country over copyright arguments, that isn’t the end users problem imo, or shouldn’t be.
