What bothers you about current social media offerings?
Posted by Popplepolls on February 25, 2023 at 6:42 pmWondering what other people think is wrong with social media. Is it the lack of “realness”? The issues with echo chambers? Or something else?
Curious about what people think… seems there is no social media for me

GuestFebruary 25, 2023 at 11:58 pmI have always been active in social media- starting with basic chatrooms back in 1996. I have seen them as a positive thing. As I have gotten older the thing that bothers me is that I cannot take a “break” from it. I’m a designer and social media is how you market and network. Secondly, it especially bothers me finding out how easily people I know lie or put up a front. I guess before we just all knew to some degree that we never know what happens behind closed doors and people put up a front. But now it’s like in your face constantly when someone you know well and intimately is so good at lying to themselves and others and curate their image so carefully- without even caring that some people know the truth. I’m obviously going through something lol

GuestFebruary 26, 2023 at 1:03 amNothing is wrong with social media. It’s just the hottest trend right now to blame everything wrong in this world on social media. Previously it was games that was the reason for all evil, now it’s social media. Fact is, it gives everyone a voice, which can be perceived as good or bad. But the media prefers to only cover the bad (while never looking at themselves, the main spreaders of fake news).

GuestFebruary 26, 2023 at 2:07 amI don’t think any of it is inherently bad, but the focus on algorithms and exposure is the biggest issue. Once Instagram and YouTube started to center around profit they really lost what drove people to the applications in the first place.

GuestFebruary 26, 2023 at 6:40 amLack of accountability when it comes to actually enforcing terms of service.
All the social media services are trailered to be exploited by bad actors.
Mass reporting through a harassment campaign can be an effective as social media will just kill the account without any attempt to assess the complaints veracity.

GuestFebruary 26, 2023 at 7:20 amMy biggest concern is the lack of transparency about user identities and how they are used. Many centralized social networks collect huge amounts of private information, often without users’ knowledge or consent. This raises serious privacy concerns, and it makes me uncomfortable to think that my personal data is being used for purposes I may not agree with.
So I’ve become more interested in decentralized alteratives. For example, such as Solcial, which prioritizes user privacy, putting control back in the hands of the users themselves. This approach gives more assurance that users are responsible for their own data. They are given the freedom to share what they want with whomever they want without fear that their data could be used.
