What are you looking for in a new social media platform?
Hey everyone! I’m in the process of building a new social media platform, and I’d love to get your input! What features or improvements would you like to see in a new platform? What are some of the pain points you’ve experienced with current social platforms—whether it’s the design, features, ads, or ROI on ad space? I’m open to all ideas, including any new and innovative concepts you think would make a platform truly stand out.

If you do a little research, you’ll find the answers to your question asked by hundreds of others who also wanted to start a new social media platform. Seriously, it’s all over the web.
The good answer, the right one, is one that users don’t yet know they want. It’s up to the next successful startup to figure out what that is.

I would love a social media app that helps you make new friends, as loneliness it’s an issue faced in today’s society, which is kind of ironic as we are more connected than ever. It could feature something like Chatroulette, where you can chat with people that are in your area.

Create a new social media platform just for people with bipolar disorder.
Too much emphasis is put on mental health help by groups focused on this community, but no one is building a community for the 9.8M US citizens (2.8% of 350M) who struggle building social relationships because of it.
Create it as a safe space for expression, and a platform for creativity, and allows members to form and foster connections with other bipolar people across the US- and perhaps beyond.
This is what I want in a new, social media platform.

Honestly I think it’s time for social media to cease to exist, it’s time to go back to going out into the real world to make connections. I believe the world is a little toooooo connected but it’s a fake connection because it’s through a screen. People lie to you in you face so you have to believe most of peoples life online is a lie/facade. So let’s get back to genuinely living off the screens.

Chronological timeline and not being bombarded by ads and sponsored posts every couple of scrolls. I just want to see my friends and family. Not corporations, celebrities or disingenuous influencers who I chose not to follow because like I said I just want to see my friends and family.

First and foremost, I want robust privacy controls. The ability to granularly manage who sees my content and how my data is used is crucial. I’d like to see a platform that prioritizes user privacy by design, perhaps even incorporating blockchain technology for decentralized data storage.
Content customization is another key feature. I’d appreciate an algorithm that learns my preferences without creating an echo chamber. Ideally, it would offer a mix of content I’m interested in along with thoughtfully curated diverse perspectives to broaden my horizons.
Meaningful interaction tools are essential. Beyond likes and comments, I’d love to see features that facilitate deeper conversations and collaborations. This could include built-in tools for co-creation, brainstorming, or even virtual meetups.
A focus on mental health is also important. Features like usage tracking, content warnings, and the ability to easily take breaks or detox would be welcome additions.
Lastly, I’m looking for a platform that promotes authenticity over perfection. This could mean prioritizing real-time, unedited content or implementing features that encourage users to share their genuine experiences rather than curated highlights.
The ideal new social media platform would balance innovation with user-centric design, creating a space that fosters genuine connections while respecting user privacy and wellbeing. It’s a tall order, but one that could revolutionize how we interact online.
