So, I was wondering if anyone else thinks this is extremely strange and an invasion of privacy. I work at an extremely small university (like less than 1000 students small) and I have been tasked by my manager to pretty much stalk a students Facebook page to find out if the father of her baby is a professor? Because apparently it’s a rumor that’s going around? Then when I couldn’t find anything on her Facebook after searching for over an hour, she just asked me to do a general search of Facebook to see if she’s posted about it in any groups.
I don’t understand why this is important to do– even if she’s having a child with a professor, it’s not breaking any laws. Sure, morally it may not be correct but this student is also an adult/nontrad student in her 30s, so what does it even matter?
I just feel really weird about this and feel like it’s a major invasion of privacy that isn’t any of our business and isn’t relevant to my job or anything.
Anyone else think this is totally weird and really not okay??

What is your job at the university?

I could imagine a situation where some professor has a pattern of relationships that are possibly exploitative with students and now university administrators are investigating and what they are asking you to do is one small part of a larger puzzle. I could also imagine a situation where one university employee is merely curious about a colleague.

Yeah that’s weird, I mean I’m all for gossip and despise those types of power imbalance relationships, but this is not professional at all

Just lie and say you didn’t find it, because that’s invasive as all fk

It sounds like the professor in question might have a reputation for shady behaviour and someone is trying to get evidence, Guaranteed it is more than just your manager trying to figure this out.

Sometimes professors sleep with students in secret relationships. If a relationship is happening between colleagues or profs and students it should be declared or in the open so that conflicts can be avoided. Profs should not be dating students in their own department. If this is going on then the prof can, and should, be taken to task over it as it opens up a risk to the institution, no matter the student’s age.

Doing a casual view of what the student posts publicly isn’t too strange. Anywhere a college or prof is mentioned and is in public is fair game. spending more than a cursory amount of time doing this is more of a productivity issue. Keeping an eye on it is an ok request especially if the organisation thinks there is going to be a post like MY PROFESSOR IS THE FATHER OF MY BABY AND HIS WIFE DOESN’T KNOW or something to that effect.

Bc the university has a code of conduct that probably says professors cannot have relations with students. So it does matter and finding out if someone is breaking the code is perfectly
Fine especially on public social media searches.
