Idk if this is the right space or not to ask this but I really am conflicted on whether or not I want to keep creating social media content.

I don’t have a business, but I like to make makeup/food/mom content. I was starting with reels on instagram and tiktok about 2-ish weeks ago, posting daily reels. I like making that stuff but at the same time I also really dislike social media, if this makes any sense. I see a lot of people constantly on their phones and it’s uncomfortable, like it’s difficult to even have a conversation with people anymore. And I guess I’m wondering if I want to contribute to that world where we have a 20 second attention span. And I have a child so I don’t want him to see me constantly on my phone (mostly editing videos). My morals are yelling at me but also my videos could be helpful to some viewers? I am all over the place and have no idea if any of this makes sense because I’m so up and down on everything and conflicted.

Thank you for any feedback. I really hope this didn’t come off as offensive because I don’t mean to cause offense!

It makes total sense that you feel conflicted. It’s tough to balance something you enjoy with the downsides of social media. Maybe set some boundaries—like creating but staying off your phone more. If you still feel unsure taking a break might help you see what feels right for you. Your feelings are valid and theres no wrong choice here.

I totally get that! Unfortunately as a tattoo artist, I have to have social media to get new clients and show people my work to compete with every other tattoo artist. One way I take control in a situation where I dont feel I have a lot of choice is to align my content with my values and therefore become passionate about making content. For example, I am only creating posts at the moment as I dont really like filming (its time consuming and I just dont enjoy it). The posts that i create are like scrapbook/diary entries which not only appeal to my creative side, feel wayyy more authentic to me but also align with my values of ‘slow’ content. Another way is I dont spend too much energy on it – I started off trying to post every couple of days, but that requires quite a bit of mental effort. Now, I sit down once a week for about an hour and schedule my posts for the week (using the meta business suite) which means I dont have to think about it every day, which makes me feel less connected to my phone which aligns with my values.

I personally consume food content in vlog style which I very much enjoy and I feel is one part of content that actually positively influences my life. If youre passionate about making videos and video editing, I could suggest maybe switching to youtube? I find that content on youtube is a lot slower (other than youtube shorts), and you could still create short form videos from clips of longer videos and post on instagram/tiktok/youtube shorts. people who find value in your shorter clips might be interested in watching longer content on youtube. Optimising content in this way could also help you be away from your phone more – more time making content, less time posting. I hope Ive interpreted your question correctly!!

If you’re not having fun – don’t do it.

It sounds like you do enjoy making the content, but I totally get the uncertainty. As a parent, you want to set a good example for your kid, but there may be a balance where you can do that while still making the videos you enjoy making. The internet isn’t going anywhere, but you can do your part to showcase healthy habits by using it to connect with people and be creative without letting it take over your life.

It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tug-of-war with your values and your interests, which is totally understandable. If you love creating content but feel uneasy about the social media, maybe you could approach it differently. Consider focusing on platforms or formats that align more with your values, like longer videos on YouTube or even a blog where you can go deeper into topics without the pressure of quick engagement. You could also set boundaries for your screen time, so you’re not constantly glued to your phone. And remember, your content can still be meaningful and helpful without contributing to the noise.
