  • To continue with current Instagram account or start fresh?

Posted by locallysourced9 on August 13, 2024 at 3:41 pm

I am a tattoo artist with an Instagram account of 16.5k followers.
I am in the process of switching careers from tattooing (back pain and other issues won’t allow me to continue) to book/game illustration which means two completely different styles of content even if both technically fall under “art”.

What I plan to draw from now on will look completely different to what I’ve posted for the last 6 years on this account. So my question is, is it better to rebrand and continue using this account or ditch it and start fresh? I’m no social media expert, I don’t understand algorithms and so, I would really appreciate any advice 🙂

I’m sorry I’m not offering advice but I came here to ask this EXACT question but the other way around haha.

I’ve heard that it’s worth it professionally to separate accounts because your followers are following your work because it’s specific and it’ll act as a portfolio for your current work. However, it’s very difficult to grow a new account due to the current algorithm and the way things are right now on IG.

I’m really struggling to grow my new tattoo account and regret making a new one a bit. It’s very difficult to manage two, I’ll say that in full confidence. Following all the tips and tricks for how to produce the correct reel to gain followers / get your work even somewhat visible is way harder than it used to be.

Rebrand your current account and with 16.5k followers it’s better to keep them and introduce your new work. Announce the change and update your content….

so the biggest question is what would happen to your current account? If it would be inactive my advice would definitely be to try it out and see wat happens. More than realizing it doesn’t work can not happen.

Or the other idea is to switch accounts. If read a comment from a person who said he/she is in the exact same situation the other way around. maybe it would be intreating for both of you to switch accounts or at least work together?

Start a new one, as the engagement rate would be really bad and its gonna impact all your future content in the long term. If you care about followers, i would recommend just running ads focused on that niche as that will also help with high organic engagement rates.

Idk. For me it’s kinda annoying when someone I follow for one specific thing starts doing another thing. It’s an instant unfollow.

Like when a fashion influencer gets in a relationship & becomes a relationship influencer or has a kid & starts making content about parenthood. That’s not why I followed them so it’s an instant unfollow.

I would usually advise you to use separate accounts, however these two ventures are not too dissimilar as they involve art and more specifically YOUR art.

I think pivoting the page & rebranding might just work in this situation.

It would be a lot harder to start over again from zero and gather an audience than a nice follower count for sure.

My suggestion is to restart a new account.

Because the fans attracted by your current account are related to tattoos.

If you update some content unrelated to tattoos, it doesn’t make much sense actually.

My advice is that you can actually interact and communicate between your tattoo-related account and your new account.

For example, the tattoos are designed on this account, etc., to guide your fans and traffic to your new account.

yes, Continue with your current Instagram account if it has a loyal following and valuable content; start fresh if rebranding or a significant strategy shift is needed.

This is really a two-sided question. I can only talk about the pros and cons of both options, but there are nuances that depend on each individual profile.

So in terms of rebranding and continuing the old account. On the one hand, you immediately get an audience that will be interested in your content since they are similar niches. This will help you reach a wider audience and get into the recommendation of your potential followers.

On the other hand, you may significantly decrease the engagement of your followers. Some of the old audience may not be authentic or interested in your content. If Instagram sees that a profile has several thousand followers, but the number of likes and comments barely reaches a few percent, it is less likely to promote such a profile.

A new profile can get a good boost from the algorithms, but it can be extremely difficult to gain the same number of followers.

My biggest recommendation for this is to YES start a brand new account.

IG has been really pushing new accounts and we’ve tested in with our clients. Making a new account and posting the same video and getting more views/engagement than the old accounts.

Another smart way to do this is to make a new account, start posting the new content on there but then collab posting with your old account so you start to get crossover.

    Hope this helps (:
