Hi there. I’ve noticed a trend lately of people going live while working their desk job. They can’t speak naturally as they are at work in a cubical type setting. Thousands watch throughout the workday. Why???

I can understand interesting jobs of assembly or while people are day baking a cake or making tumblers but I can’t understand why they would go live while we just watch them do computer work (camera is facing at the person working).

I work in digital marketing but this one is a new one and I’m trying to figure it out. Does going live make $ from the amount watching? Are there legitimate reasons to do this? I’m honestly curious about it.

As someone who works in digital marketing, you should know that weird crap like this is always a combination of a few factors:

    1. People are idiots. Whether it’s children, bots, or just…mentally divergent people….the crap people click on is fuckin weird.
    2. the algorithm is dumb. People working in cubicles can’t respond but I’m sure people in chat try – that’s engagement. Or maybe they’re confused about what they tuned into – that’s view time.

While I can’t speak for the ones you saw exactly, I really recommend checking out body doubling. It’s a method to increase productivity or just get stuff done by doing stuff together, even virtually. So, for example, you might watch a ‘study with me’ to get motivated to study, like you’re not doing it alone. Same goes for work; if you’re doing work remote, then hopping into a livestream where someone else is also working can help keep you productive.
