GuestAugust 5, 2024 at 11:59 amI don’t know much about how each platform is doing, but it seems like almost all of them are past their prime. So it may be the perfect time for something new to emerge.
But as to what that could be is anybody’s guess. I wanted to say Threads just given Meta’s history, but I’m not so sure now. For a relatively new platform, it’s not getting near the traffic I would expect. It’s also full of engagement and rage bait. But I assume they’re going to keep pushing it hard and try to come up with new ways to increase activity there.

GuestAugust 5, 2024 at 12:38 pmWe’re likely to see a rise in platforms that use AI and AR to create more immersive experiences. Short-form video content will continue to dominate, but there might be a shift toward more niche communities and decentralized platforms for greater privacy. New tech like AI will influence organic content by making it more personalized and interactive.

GuestAugust 5, 2024 at 3:41 pmIt definitely feels like we’re overdue for something new. BeReal was the last truly new social network (not counting post-Twitter clones) and that didn’t seem to have staying power.
I think people are somewhat jaded to social media right now to the extent that it may be harder for a new one to spring up. In terms of the direction social is taking, it seems like people are moving away from connecting with people individually and more towards having a curated stream of content, as platforms abandon their simple, social roots chasing TikTok’s success.
Looking forward, I think the next platform will expand on recent updates in tech. A lot of the major players are experimenting with fediverse (decentralized) platforms—but lately, every major tech company has just been pivoting to AI, and I don’t see much potential for a generative AI-driven social network.
We also see a lot of movement away from centralized communication to more niche communities through platforms like Discord. It seems like social is splitting in two: hyper-local networks for communicating with friends and specific communities, and algorithm-based content feeds.

GuestAugust 6, 2024 at 12:16 amHere is my prediction, and it’s a crazy one.
Have you noticed trends repeat themselves about every 20 years? I was in high school during the mid 1990s, and fashion was based on the 1970s. There was an 80s revival in the early 2000s, and now the fashion of the 90s is coming back.
I’m predicting that younger gen-z and gen alpha will step back from social media as an entertainment platform and use it for communicating with close friends. They will opt for real life experiences, such as hanging out at malls and going to arcades. Older platforms like MySpace and Foursquare, or new platforms that can emulate them will conquer the social media landscape.
As for advertising, prepare for advertising on messaging platforms like Meta Messenger, WhatsApp, and even Threads. Also, look into advertising on streaming TV and radio because the younger generations might not be accessible on social platforms.
