  • Swapping out headers on the homepage for stylized text jpegs – will it hurt SEO?

    Hey folks,

I manage a Shopify site. I have a number of headers on my homepage that I’m considering swapping out with stylized text images that are more on-brand. The headers that would be replaced are along the lines of, “What is NICHE NAME?” and “Learn How To NICHE.” Would there be SEO repercussions to swapping out the text for graphics, provided the alt text is accurate?

Personally, I’d not use images for headings. It’s usually a bad idea!

Text is far more indexable and generally preferred by Google. That’s not to say the change will absolutely be bad… It depends on the rest of the page. Is the other content above the fold? Do the pages have enough text to support the change? Do the keywords already contain replacement phrasing? (“Learn how to niche”).

Alt text should be relevant to the image, not the page!!! Google will almost ignore any keyword stuffing you do in the alt, title, etc, if it’s not relevant to the image.

If you’re using text based images, then you shouldn’t have a problem. Google uses OCR to read text based images. You’ll need to make sure the image resolutions and sizes are optimized.
