  • Struggling to grow my travel Instagram account. Any advice?

Posted by Upper-Flamingo-200 on May 3, 2023 at 1:54 pm

I started a travel Instagram account about a year ago, documenting my adventures and sharing beautiful destinations with my followers. I’ve been posting consistently, but I’ve been stuck at around 1.5k followers for months. Other travel accounts I know are growing much faster. Should I buy followers to appear more popular and attract more people?

Personal opinion, bots are a waste of time and money. I get the allure, but bots will tank your engagement, won’t help you with discovery in the algorithm, and Instagram is always deleting bots so you won’t have the followers forever.

Stick to the basics. Be engaging. Investigate hashtags. Communicate to your people with comments, etc. Look at what the other profiles are doing differently. It’s a slow grind, I know.

    Good luck with everything!

I recommend focusing on engaging with other travel accounts and their followers. Comment on their posts, like their followers’ comments, and respond to their followers to increase the chances of them noticing your profile. Avoid spammy comments, and instead opt for genuine compliments or observations about their content.

I advise against buying fake followers or likes, as this can harm your account’s reach and even lead to it being banned. If you’re willing to invest in promotion, consider ads or growth services instead. AscendViral is a growth service that has received positive reviews and could help you grow organically.

Utilize hashtags effectively for more visibility, choosing low competition hashtags to avoid your posts being buried. Also, include location tags for cities or regions you visit. Ultimately, perseverance is key. Best of luck!

I have a travel/hiking/ photography account (4k followers) and my engagement has been at an extremely fucking weird standstill for the last 2 years. I’ve been slowly losing followers during that time, will occasionally gain a follower or 2, will stay at that number for a while, then I’ll lose like 3-4, and repeat. On top of that, I’ll get maybe 10-30 likes per post, but this past month, I’m lucky if I get over 7. It’s generally the same pool of people liking mg posts, and its normally people I follow back. Very rarely do new followers or people I don’t follow back like my posts. It’s very odd, and I fail to believe that my content is not good enough.

My account is also in good standing, and I’ve never bought followers. So I have no clue what to do, but I think I do need to change something, and I’ve been trying to be more observant of my account so I can get out of my slump, because it’s been really demoralizing. Somethings I’ve noticed:

    1) I’m a millennial, and a lot of people who follow me have been with social media since the mid 2000s. A lot of people, friends and acquaintances, just don’t use the app anymore, and a lot of people have dropped off since COVID, So I definitely feel like the fact that a lot of my followers are no longer active is definitely affecting my account.

    2) I need to start following trends. I hate the idea of it, but I feel like Instagram is becoming like Tik Tok and that’s what I gave to push for. So I need to look at travel reels and photos and see what people are doing, and start making content along the lines of that.

    3) I need to make better use of my stories. I tend to just post what I feel like posting in my stories. but while my engagement is low on my posts, I get a lot of story views and people lingering there. I tend to put my posts there too and I feel like this has made a lot of my followers lazy, and maybe that’s why they’re not liking posts cuz they can just see them in my stories, so maybe I have to stop doing that.

So I think it’s important that you do the same, try to see what you’re “doing wrong” and figure out what you should be doing. But ALSO, keep in mind that the algorithm just sucks now. Like yeah, I could be following more trends and what not, but I feel like there no way that my lack of engagement is completely my doing.

My Instagram page was started in 2019. And it is still stuck at 200-something followers. It is disheartening especially when I work hard to make good content, spend enough time on creating reels and posts equally. Nobody seems to bother. Hardly 3-4 reels have gotten some views and likes. Rest I get hardly 20-30 likes and mostly from the people I know (relatives and friends).
But never felt like buying followers. Why fake something when we know it isn’t the truth?

For the occasional post or reel that did well, I assume what worked was trending audio and hashtags. Again, it’s a hit or miss. I have posted one reel which went viral at one time, a few days later I tried uploading another reel at the same time but it didn’t get much views.

Instagram algorithm sucks. Nothing much we can do about. Rather we focus on making good content.
