  • Social Media Strategy: Instagram vs. TikTok

Hey fellow marketers, I hope you are well. My niche is helping entrepreneurs and professionals get control of their alcohol drinking. A bit more than 6 weeks ago I launched my Instagram and TikTok account in order to start building my brand and generating leads. On Instagram I obtained **190 followers and 53k total reel views**, while on TikTok I managed to obtain **8.6k followers and more than 3.8 million total video views**.

Why am I getting so much bigger exposure on TikTok even though I am posting exactly the same content and using the same titles/descriptions/hashtags as on Instagram? Are the algorithms on each platform so much different? Do you perhaps have any tips on how to grow my Instagram account?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hashtags only do so much. They can be ignored.
TikTok is just inflated. First of all every impression counts as a view. Second of all followers do not mean that much as most of the content is watched on the FYP.

Because Tiktok algorithm is nicer than instagram. They are more generous about where your content will appear. They are geo-based and they really target your market based on the interest and niche that you are posting.

Also, recently I realized that Instagram nowadays is more used as an engagement platform where in you need to organically connect and make relationships with your audience for you to have better leads.

We would need more information to give a thorough answer. Yes, the algorithms are very different. But a major factor could be as simple as this: your content is better suited for audience expectations on TT. Maybe your content has more of an aesthetic of authenticity and has less visual refinement. That will generally play better on TT than IG.

The user demographics could be affecting performance too. Alcohol abstention also appears to be more common in gen Z, who are a larger part of TTs user base. IGs users are generally older and perhaps less likely to be interested in abstention content.

People use TikTok solely to watch videos. Whilst people use IG more for social engagement.

It’s possible that your content is resonating more with the TikTok audience because the algorithms on each platform are different. so it’s no surprise that you’re seeing different results.

I would suggest focusing on creating content specifically tailored to each platform. For example, on Instagram, you could focus on creating more visually appealing content, such as photos and videos, while on TikTok, you could focus on creating more engaging content, such as short videos and challenges. You could also experiment with different types of content on Instagram to see what resonates with your audience.

Another thing you can do is to consider using ads on Instagram to reach a wider audience or you can try one of those agencies such as Ascend viral that can help you get potential followers organically. They also offer content consultation to help you improve your content. You could also try using different hashtags and titles to see if that helps you reach a larger audience.

Its the difference in algorithms. Interest graph for TikTok vs Social graph for Instagram.

The two platforms also work best at different stages of the the sales funnel. TikTok at the top of the funnel for outreach. Instagram at the middle for engagement.
