1. The copyright laws protecting the Olympics are so arcane and airtight that most brands’ motto is “don’t bother.”
2. In general, an illustration of a copyrighted photo is only considered fair use if it’s substantially different from the original photo.
3. The IOC makes direct, exclusive deals with media organizations to take licensed photos of the games; other photography is generally not allowed.
4. The IOC’s guidelines specifically state:
>Photographs of the Olympic Games must not be used to create an unauthorized association, in particular for commercial or promotional purposes, aiming at promoting any entities, brands products or services, including that of the Media Organization.
