    How do you find clients?

I’m looking for a social media manager with coral, aquatics, saltwater, reef keeping experience- whether a hobbyist or professionally. Bonus points (and additional pay) for other web and marketing based abilities. It’s a rather complex and fairly obscure industry, and I’m worried it would be too challenging for just anyone to take on.

I’ve posted in multiple Reef keeping groups and forums online, and scoured the internet for clues on who to network with. I’m just not feeling confident that I will be able to find someone who fits this criteria.

Any suggestions on other places to look? Is it possible for someone to learn enough about the coral industry for it to be a good fit? Or am I fishing in too small of a pond?

Have you tried looking at local universities? There may be marine science students who would be interested.

Social is social. Knowledge is your domain. The same as an accountant is an accountant, and will learn aviation, or FMCG when moving to one of those companies.

What kind of role are you expecting your social media manager to take on that they need first hand knowledge about this specifically? Find someone capable who has an interest in it, get them fact sheets and info, be available when they have questions and train your staff.

You’re over complicating by a lot. Industry experience is a fantastic bonus for people to have, but not an essential for support roles.

I would ask around – that sounds like a needle in a haystack – have you tried LinkedIn or other job platforms?

Complex content specialist here. I’ve worked on projects for literal rocket scientists without any previous exposure to their industry. Familiarity always helps but it’s not a necessity for good content.

Firstly, find a smm that’s willing to learn and have them share their experiences as a newbie. Great for educational pieces.

Second, find an influencer that’s already in the reef social space and freelance them for bulk content creation on the advanced material. Your smm can manage the strategy, posting and analytics without having to be an expert in your field.
