    Hi all,

I recently began a new job as a “Digital Media Manager” at a community college in the U.S.

One of my responsibilities (though not my #1) is to manage social media content for the various channels. Part of this is updating Procedures & Guidelines which haven’t been touched since 2018.

In that time: Reels/ Tik Tok are now THE thing, the use of copyrighted audio is hand in hand with trending content, and memes are now a part of the common discourse. I’d like to make sure all my bases are covered as I update for 2022-2023 and was hoping to get some feedback on a few topics. Any insight you can provide is helpful, feel free to message me directly if you’d rather…

    * Does anyone have any insight on using “non-music” audio for content for a business/organization? Any information on copyright and liability is what I’m looking for.
    * **(Ex: dialog, spoken audio from Tik Tok, or sound effect-based trends)**
    * Would student-run clubs have the same restrictions that the main college account would?
    * Memes: While I have no interest in using memes for the main college page (not really our voice), I know that A LOT of students have brought to my attention the idea of using them for their club content. What would you say are the hard-fast rules of posting a meme from a student-run club social account?
    * **If they change text on a meme to pertain to their club’s interests ( using Imgflip, Canva, Photoshop, etc.) is it going to result in the school being held responsible?**

I appreciate anything you can send my way to help me out!

    Thanks!

You should talk to your school’s legal department. They will be the best people to advise you on what you can and can’t do. Consulting with them will also protect you (and your job) should anything go wrong.
