Not just one platform, the entire internet and every platform needs a dislike button badly.

I see so much junk on Facebook and Instagram where people post literally anything they want with no backlash. E.g. ever since YouTube removed their dislike counts, I see such junk on YouTube too now such as people exploding stuff in microwave, fake scenario videos, cruel pranks, etc. compared to how clean and balanced it was previously.

These platforms claim they don't have dislike to reduce harassment, but don't you think it ironically backfires? Not having dislikes let's people post whatever crap they want about anything and anyone, which in itself can be harassing for someone, and they of course won't stop because there is no metric to calculate the backlash occuring. Furthermore, this freedom will further boost their egos to keep doing it more and worse, possibly taking bad actions in real life too.

Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc. I wish actually listened to save the internet and save us. Negative feedback is actually more important than positive feedback, because positive feedback can be faked using bots and tools, but negative feedback is nearly always, genuine.

Negative content gets more engagement. See also: 24 hour news on TV. So, social media platform algorithms are serving up negative content more often, but don’t want people to see that it’s already perceived badly.

What I’d like to see is platforms doing more to remove and dissuade content which is fake, false, cruel and so on. The dislike button is potentially a small part of that, but really we need better moderation.

That’s not because of the removal of a dislike button, it’s people trying more and more ‘wacky things’ to get engagement.

Have you seen how the laughing emoji reaction is used on Facebook? Not necessarily between users but on news stories and public profiles. I’ve seen articles about ex addicts getting clean and trying to do something positive – 😂. Someone opens an alcohol free bar – 😂. Women arrange a walk around the city at night to raise awareness for how dangerous it can be – 😂. Someone dares to exist as LGBTQIA+/asylum seeker/poor/vegan/be any minority or have aspirations for change – 😂. It’s so fuckin cruel. As long as there are bored unhappy people there’ll be abuse of a dislike button. “Bad” content is totally subjective.

It does, but people with tiny feelings syndrome will whine about it again!

Negative content gets a lot of attention and needs to change, i agree that there should be a dislike button

I completely agree; a dislike button could help hold people accountable for posting junk content and provide a more balanced view of public opinion.

Platforms, especially those claiming to be family-friendly, should seriously consider enhancing content moderation and implementing more nuanced feedback options.

Wow, so much good stuff here to unpack.

100% agree with you on the problems you’re seeing. There’s tons of garbage out there, both on a personal level (stuff I don’t want to see, but you might) and platform level (many people are obviously watching these cruel prank videos, but I’m guessing they’re not too proud about it).

Dislike buttons carry their own problems though. They’re meant to inflict punishment and that power activates its own negative emotions. I think there’s a better way, but it helps to think about the personal level and platform level separately.

    * **Personal level** – The issue here is what each of us wants in our lives. There’s no need to prevent others from doing what they want, but please stop annoying me.
    * **Platform level** – There are two root problems here. 1) Platforms prioritize attention, even negative attention 2) Platforms prioritize influencers over friends. Solve these issues and you’ll see far fewer prank videos.

I think it’s a good idea but unfortunately I’m sure a lot of people are going abuse it. It’s why they haven’t implemented it.

YouTube comments are now the most delightful place on the internet, for this among other reasons.

Not just a dislike button, but the ability to immediately block or hide responses that use emojis – of any kind. Our natural language is reverting back to hieroglyphics and not in a good way.

Never knew why they didn’t have it in the first place ! YouTube been doing it for years there’s a reason a dislike button exists !

If you’re seeing junk and stuff you don’t want to see id say to train the algorithm by letting it know you’re not interested in the type of content and interact more with the contents you want to see
